Red Sox leaning toward inexperienced manager?

10:06 AM ET 09.30 | There's an industry-wide assumption that the Red Sox do not plan to bring Bobby Valentine back for 2013, and considering that the team began the final week with a shot at 90 losses, it makes sense that they'd want to move on. While most of the candidates they interviewed last winter -- Torey Lovullo, Pete Mackanin, Dale Sveum, Sandy Alomar Jr. -- had no previous big league managing experience, the Sox ultimately felt uncomfortable with the prospect of an unproven manager dealing with a group of underachievers, which is why Valentine and Gene Lamont ended up being the two finalists. But the success of Robin Ventura with the White Sox and Mike Matheny with the Cardinals has changed plenty of teams' thinking, including the Red Sox. That means people like former Sox third baseman Bill Mueller, former Astros catcher Brad Ausmus, and maybe even current Sox bench coach Tim Bogar could be candidates when the Sox presumably begin their search in a week.

Don't look any further than Sandy Alomar if their thinking it's to hire an unexpirienced manager.

The team needs a new identity, one exemplified by guys such as Pedroia. They need a manager who also personifies that type of work ethic and passion. Not sure who that would be, but I think Jason Varitek could fit the bill.

They should just disband the team. Start over in a city that will appreciate having a team.

It would signal a youth movement if hiring an inexperienced manager were to happen.

I understand this is "Truth and Rumors," but this doesn't seem to even be a rumor. A reporter from the Herald thinks the Red Sox might have changed their thinking about what kind of manager they might want for next year.

How true it is!
That being said, either Mueller and Bogar might be worth the risk.

That pic of Bogar is straight up creepy. Like you just walked in on him chopping up 7 or 8 people.

I think ownership and management will get after it this off season and try to fix this mess as quickly as possible.

Sox board room conversation - let's line up the usual suspects, we'll call them the victims. We'll give out straws and whoever has the short straw gets blessed with this mess.

I think they should go for pure entertainment value and hire Manny Ramirez.

This is nothing more than barroom conversation speculation about what the BoSox "should" do, without any contribution from the folks who will make the managerial decision.
The sports writer had to fill some linear inches so speculation is as good as anything else in this dismal last week of the season.

Varitek didn't do diddly when the Sox folded in September last year.
