NCAA investigates Wooden

07:06 AM ET 01.15 | Just before the start of this college basketball season, UCLA received a letter of inquiry from the NCAA, seeking information about possible illegal contact between a recruit and a person representing the interests of the university. The recruit was Kevin Love, now the Bruins' star freshman center. The person representing the interests of the university was John Wooden. The NCAA has not disclosed who made the complaint. Love and his family visited Wooden during his recruiting trip. They had a nice chat, Wooden teased the Loves' young daughter, Emily, for being so quiet, and a nice time was had by all.

This is just stupid.

January 15, 2008  09:31 AM ET

Go gingerly here, NCAA. Some things are sacred and some people are worthy of respect and dignity. If he violated any rule, I would argue the man is not the type to have done it willingly.

January 15, 2008  09:33 AM ET

Have we REALLY sunk this low when a recruit can't meet a legend? If he was still alive and I played football, I would want to meet Bo Schembechler more than anything. Coach Wooden is nothing but class, and if ANYONE deserves the highest levels of respect it is the "Wizard of Westwood."

Whoever "broke" this story or reported it should be ashamed...leave them alone.

January 15, 2008  09:46 AM ET

An interesting juxtaposition in LA, really. The NCAA can't keep track of Reggie Bush getting $300K and a house for his family, but are all over a recruit for visiting a living legend?? The only think left is to wait for Bill Walton to call the whole thing an 'egregious travesty of a mockery of a sham'. Can the NCAA get anything right? This is up there with the Jonny Mosely / skiing income lunacy. Are these people smoking something in the NCAA meetings?

January 15, 2008  10:06 AM ET

how about a little equality here? guilt by accusation - you know, the same standard used for Clemens, Bush and other big name athletes. oh wait -- the sportswriters 'know' good old Wooden didn't do anything wrong, so we'll give UCLA and Wooden a pass. we don't need courts of law, we just need sportswriters and bloggers.

January 15, 2008  10:16 AM ET

who cares...i think that if john wooden wants to promote ucla, he should have the right to....I believe he's earned it....man find something to talk about

January 15, 2008  10:32 AM ET

So wait, just because this man is old that means he should get a pass?? Give me a break. A rule is a rule regardless of who is breaking it.

I never hear any of you people complaining when the media is slamming anyone else without a conviction... So, why should they stop now??

January 15, 2008  10:42 AM ET

Didn't Wooden allegedly have the biggest sugar daddy of them all (Sam Gilbert?) behind his program at UCLA in the late 60s and early 70s? As I recall, the NCAA did nothing about that at the time. Has the whole story on that "partnership" ever come out?? Wooden may simply think rules don't apply to him...

January 15, 2008  11:47 AM ET

This is ridiculous.....

January 15, 2008  11:53 AM ET

This is up there with the Jonny Mosely / skiing income lunacy. Are these people smoking something in the NCAA meetings? - qstudiosdoc

I believe that it was actually Jeremy Bloom that you're thinking of.

And, Yes, this is just as ridiculous.

January 15, 2008  12:04 PM ET

What is wrong with the news media? for all that this man has done for College basketball and UCLA should say enough about his intentions. No man is more loved in collegae sports! leave him alone!

their are more important issues out their, i.e. drug users, violance in sports

January 15, 2008  12:12 PM ET

What a joke. The NCAA is scum. They've got to have better things to do than this--Investigating a 94 year old. You have to be kidding me.

January 15, 2008  12:57 PM ET

I would love to know who filed the complaint. Coach Wooden is essentially the Mother Theresa of sports so it saddens me that somebody would put this type of stress on a man of his age.

I know for a fact that he will meet with anybody that asks him to, not just recruits. My father wrote a letter to him once that we would be in LA on vacation, and Mr. Wooden actually met our family for lunch and talked with us for 3 hours. So my assumption is he was just being a friendly person as he has been his whole life.

January 15, 2008  01:25 PM ET

I'm a Trojan and I love to see UCLA get taken down a notch or two, but this just doesn't seem right. More motivation for university officials, conferences, students, alumni and fans across the country to join together to put the NCAA in check.

January 15, 2008  01:31 PM ET

I think everyone here is missing the point. This story is over and done with. The NCAA got a complaint from someone and just requested information about the event. That's just being responsible. And no, Wooden should NOT get a pass....he doesn't NEED one because he didn't do anything wrong.

Everyone just settle down. Some reporter just found out about this and decided it was blog worthy or whatever....so here it is. It's also a dead issue.

January 15, 2008  01:44 PM ET

I wouldn't go far as to say that the NCAA are scums because they're investigating a possible lead on John Wooden. If any of you have HBO, watch the documentary on UCLA basketball. You'll get an interesting account on John Wooden during the UCLA dynasty. There have been reports that Wooden was aware of possible illegal activities when it came to providing money, goods, etc., to his players. They never directly linked him to the corruption--but they did say that he knew about it and how he never reacted to such incidents.

January 15, 2008  01:57 PM ET

So then is a non-committed high school player allowed to play in the MacDonald's All-Star if one of his teammates is committed to a school he is considering?

January 15, 2008  01:59 PM ET

This is just another power play by the NCAA. It is THEY that should be investigated. They make millions of dollars every year on the sweat and work of kids who get nothing! How much does that new NCAA Director make? Is it six hundred thousand a year, or seven? And I wouldn???t even guess at the amount of his expense account. These guys just do whatever they want in order to rationalize their paychecks and power base. It???s no wonder these people want to keep the train rolling down this track. And then to pick on JOHN WOODEN!! Give me a break.

January 15, 2008  02:31 PM ET

Now maybe Wooden will speak out against the monster that is the NCAA.

localboy - that's how shady SI and CNN are, leaches, thats how the entire media monster is, and i can say this with a gf who's in the media.
