08:06 AM ET 10.01 | Losing Tyson Chandler from the roster in Dallas also meant losing some edge in the paint. Elton Brand, a first overall pick out of Duke and former All-Star, basically announced himself as willing and able to play the enforcer role. "I'm definitely going to have to anchor the defense, bring toughness," the 6-foot-9, 254-pound Brand said. "I'm not proud of it, but I think I led the league in flagrant fouls last year. You've got to bring that. In order to win, you've got to do those kind of things, protect that paint." Actually, Brand led the league in flagrant fouls in 2010-11, but you get his point. Truth be told, Brand sounded at least a little bit proud of his hacking history. "I'm not ashamed," he admitted with a grin.

Hmmm hacking does not make you an enforcer it just makes you a hack. If you want to enforce the paint play good D. Oh wait you dont know what that means do you.

Well I for one, respect any player who candid and frank about 1) his willingness to be a butch kid when called upon to do, 2) puttin people on notice that if you come in my territory...expect it. This is the reason I wanted Kmart so badly for the Knicks (he would've taught Stat a thing or two about patrolling the paint), but Tyson and Kurt ain't nobody's pushovers in this dept.

G-B Hacking was the way we sent a message to other teams but we had some great defenders also. Rodman and Joe Dumars. Sally was a good shot blocker and for all the bruising Mahorn and Billy Lamb did they were good one on one defenders. Brand can send a message with hacking but if he doesnt play D then no one will fear him they will just go to the line and shoot 2.

Apple I can respect a hack...heck I grew up watching the bad boys but if Brand doesnt play D then guys will still come down the lane. K Mart on the other hand will hack you and play good D and I think he would have made a great addition to the Knicks but instead you got my guy Sheed.

Not surprising. Brand can score, but rebounds and shot blocking are what the Mavs are looking for Brand to provide. It'll be interesting to see the Mavs this year.

Nah son..Elton's never been that. Maybe its different for me bc I saw him play in New York in HS and know his background...yeah he went to DUKE but being a 'fake tough guy' is something he is not. I guarantee you wouldnt say that to him...

Nothing replaces good defense. Hacking just cuts down minutes exponentially while you sit out in foul trouble.

Come on! Brand is not the player he was before tearing his ankle/foot tendon. Brand is not in Philly this season because he can't elevate off the ground anymore. Brand does not have the quickness to penetrate dripple one-on-one, his movements are mechanical vice the deliberate attacks that he use to display that made him an all-star with the Clippers. I'm not sure if Dallas will get much service from his lead foot to the point he becomes a force again. About ten or less years ago, Brand would never appear on any team's trade radar. Brand is considered serviceable damaged goods.

He's too brittle to enforce anything, but the bench!

In fairness to Brand, he did have a great season defensively last year in Philly (Zach Lowe had a good article about this late last season). While he's no Chandler, he'll ease Dirk's defensive duties down low.
