Competition for Hunter from Dallas?

08:10 AM ET 10.01 | Owner Arte Moreno, admitting there would be more than a little backlash if the Angels didn't keep Torii Hunter, all but played his hand on the outfielder. But if Moreno is serious about keeping Hunter, he might want to act quickly. Hunter, 37, lives in Prosper, Texas, a suburb in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. The Rangers long have had interest in acquiring him. And considering that both outfielder Josh Hamilton and catcher Mike Napoli could leave the Rangers as free agents -- and right fielder Nelson Cruz is free the offseason after that -- the team almost certainly will look for offensive help. A trade for a younger slugger such as the Diamondbacks' Justin Upton is more likely than a short-term signing of Hunter.

Tell FOX Sports the Rangers play in Arlington not Dallas.

Why Mr. Writer would the Rangers want to get older with Hunter with all of that young talent they have. Maybe you are his agent instead of a sports writer.

For the right price... come on home.

Hunter had a great year this year. He should be good for another year or two of diminishing returns, while the Rangers break in the youngsters. Some DH, some outfield play, some sitting on the bench. The Angels need to either get Bourjos in the lineup or trade him, and they don't seem to want to trade him.

The Rangers do not need an old washed up outfielder. They have plenty of young talent to replace Hamilton and Napoli.

The Rangers took a chance on Vlad and it worked out OK. I could see Hunter in that capacity too and he could provide some playing time, but don't know that he'd take that deep of a pay cut ...

He's not washed up just yet...

But to paraphrase good ol' Branch Rickey: It's better to let em go a year too early than a year too late.

Unless he comes at a bargain-basement price, I can't see the Rangers signing a 37 year old outfielder and even then it would only be a one year deal. I doubt if Hunter will sign for one year.

Napoli had a career year last year and a career night last night but he is definitely expendable. He's batting 220ish this year and is not very good defensively. Teams run wild on Texas when Nap is behind the plate.

I don't care if Hamilton goes or stays as long as the Rangers don't break the bank giving him a monster contract. His RBIs are more a function of where he hits in the order than of his talent. He hits some home runs but he also strikes out a LOT, especially in key situations. Other than his 10th inning homer in game 6 of the WS last year, I haven't seen him do anything extraordinary in the post-season, either.

He's a good player but he comes with too much baggage to mortgage the franchise for him.

As for the Rangers young talent, their two top prospects are on the roster now...Profar and Olt. Neither has been exactly spectacular in limited play. They will get an opportunity to make the club next spring, though...unless they become trade bait this winter.

wiseup: Hunter going to Yankees make sense. Ibanez is pushing 40, so they will need a 38 year old outfielder to replace him. The Yankees should chage thier name to the New York Retirees.

October 1, 2012  04:27 PM ET

wiseup If a team is interested, offer a one or two year contract at discount price. If that is not acceptable, he can take his demands else where.

Torii Hunter will sign with the Astros to play OF and DH.

You heard it here first.

October 1, 2012  07:26 PM ET

Yankees would only offer 1 year deal, don't think Hunter would go there! They will probably keep Ichro!!!

October 1, 2012  08:07 PM ET

Torii will work it out to stay in Anaheim... definately a pay cut but he'll retire an Angel.

Semantics? Neither do the Dallas Cowboys. Nor do the Miami Marlins or Dolphins play in Miami...nor the New York Giants, Jets or Islanders in New York...nor the Tampa Bay Rays in Tampa...nor the Angels in LA, the Redskins in Washington, or the Pistons in Detroit.

The Rangers represent a metro area, not a suburb--without Dallas-Ft. Worth, they would still be the Washington Senators.
