08:13 AM ET 10.02 | Though Nick Markakis remains weeks from returning, there's better news for Jason Hammel. [Markakis] will not have the pins removed from his left thumb as the team had hoped. The area isn't fully healed enough in there and it will be a minimum of three weeks before Markakis could return. He's hoping to get cleared to have the pins removed next week and then he would be put in a sling for two weeks after that. ... [Hammel] threw a simulated game in Sarasota, Fla. [Monday], throwing 73 pitches over five innings. Hammel also fielded his position with no problems and he is a candidate to start a potential playoff game on Saturday, which would be on regular rest.

It is so refreshing to hear people talking about the O's and A's preparing for the playoffs instead of the Angels and Dodgers who tried to buy their way in and fail.

Good news for the Os. Good to see them finishing the season strong.
