Yankees overworked CC on Monday

08:15 AM ET 10.02 | The oft-invoked sports mantra of "One game at a time" may come back to bite the Yankees. [Joe Girardi] -- in a decision that was curious at best, dangerous at worst -- used precisely that rationale for extending left-hander CC Sabathia to eight innings in a blowout of the Red Sox on Monday night. In this case, "one game at a time" did not apply. Not when the Yankees might need Sabathia on short rest in a one-game, wild-card playoff Friday. Not when Sabathia has been on the disabled list twice this season. Not when the Yankees will need him to fill his usual role of workhorse in the playoffs, should they advance. Another baseball mantra would have been more appropriate on Monday night -- a pitcher has only so many bullets.

The Yankees were trying to rest the bullpen and get them ready for the postseason.....

The bullpen needed a rest and CC gave them exactly that. CC its gonna be fine he's used to that.

CC has had 3 great games in a row so he appears to doing just fine. Our pitching is pretty decent overall now that we have Andy Petttitte back and Phelps has earned his way into the mix.

The bullpen should have 15 guys out there this time of year. With the lead they had and the lineup the Red Sox threw out there, there is no way CC should have went that deep in the game.

You are right. And Girardi is a fool if he does not plan for a one game playoff now. You hope for the best and plan for the worst. But that is Joe, always ready with the safe answer.

Even if they avoid the 1 game playoff, giving CC a little extra rest before the playoffs start will only make him stronger. IMO, Girardi's a idiot for leaving him in that game past the 5th inning.

I can only think most of did NOT see the game . If you had you saw CC was never taxed, never had a big pitch inning it was probably the easiest 8 innings he pitched all year.

The Yankees need Sabathia coming into the playoffs with momentum. This is three straight 8-innings starts for CC. He's finally pitching like an ace. I approve of Girardi not worrying about a one-game wild card game. Don't even consider the possibility of making the playoffs via the wildcard. Focus on clinching the division and that's it. That being said, if a wild card game was necessary, I don't doubt that Pettitte might get the ball. Why not hand a one-game playoff to the best postseason pitcher ever. He's been pitching tremendously since returning.

Yankees need to focus on winning right now, until the division is clinched. If that means leaving CC out there for a few more innings, so be it.

There was no food in the dugout and they were afraid he'd eat the bat boy if they took him out before he was too tired to reach him.

Not only should he be preparing for a one game playoff, but a two one game playoff. If tied for first it is one game then a one game wild card playoff the next day.
Giradi manages scared, that is why his bullpen has been abused with the same four pitchers used nearly every game. It also explains why the Yankess are 26th for sacrifice bunts, steals and you never see a hit and run attempt. He plays it safe and has all the safe answers/excuses.

They had a 9 run lead and they were facing a AAA lineup. There was no reason for CC to be out there past the 5th inning.

The Red Sox have been such a fearsome rally team for the past two months they might have come back from 9-0, so it's best to use up your best pitcher to be sure they are dead.
Oh, wait..., forget that!

They are a reflection of his style of play. Every pitcher in the NL can bunt! Girardi does not ask them to and obviously it is not something they work on much so the self fulfilling prophesy thrives. When asked to they make the most half heart attempt knowing they can then just hit away.
Arod is the leading base stealer! Really? You cannot hit and run with guys like Ichiro and Jeter? Girardi made them this way. And that is why they have been dismal offensive failures in the playoffs the last two years. Facing playoff type pitchers they have no alternative but to just swing away and hope. They have not beat a quality pitcher in months.

Heck, Pedroia and Ellsbury were not even in that lineup last night. Only a serious Red Sox fan even heard of most of those guys. Who knows what CC is now. Garcia might have shut that group down.

Congrats Tigers for winning their division. And maybe the first triple crown winner since Yaz. Yankees have had a tough time with them Tigers in the playoffs lately, so rest up.
