Parise calls out Bettman for bragging

08:24 AM ET 10.03 | As someone who signed a monster contract weeks before the lockout, Zach Parise is more central than most to the labor dispute, and he's making sure to keep himself there with his recent comments. Asked how long this could go considering both sides have shown no willingness to bridge the gap, Parise said, "You hope it doesn't go too long, but it's tough to grasp when you've got a guy in Gary Bettman bragging every year that we're making "record revenue, record revenue, record this," and all of a sudden they want to take a quarter of what you've made away. That doesn't make sense to anybody. It doesn't matter what industry you're in." ... [The] players believe the owners should honor and be responsible for the contracts they agreed to.

Hopefully, when all this greediness ends and we start all over again playing a "sport", we can go back to just enjoying the game, fans have got to send a message to all the exorbitant salaries and revenues generated by these so called athletes and owners that they are ruining the sport, after all, isn't the reason they play is the love of the sport, I know its business, but they're going to price themselves out of business

Especially when they are dumb enough to sign a couple of guys to ridiculous contracts, right Zach?

The owners are trying to pull a swindle job on the players.....NO contract should be rolled back any percentage.

Bettman is a jerk. So are the Fehrs. No contracts that were signed should be rolled back and if that is agreed to, there will still be another work stoppage in the future (either a lockout or strike) at the next deadline when that is established. Count on it. There is no hope. Zach is underpaid, as is Ovie, Sid and about 99.8 % of the poverty-stricken members of the NHLPA. The owners, of course, are all magnificent and charitable souls who fight injustice, poverty and for the American (and Canadian, of course) way. Bless them. Ha! May they all get a puck in the teeth!

Nice thought, but this is the price of success. Both sides get greedy and lose perspective. The only hope we have is that the NHL owners and players take a cue from the NFL owners and players and act a tad more responsibly and less like spoiled little brats.

Zip it Zach! Don't expect anybody to feel sorry for you! It was you who said 'the hell with the Devils!' and sold yourself out to the highest bidder because that's what's best for you. So, ZIP IT ZACH! You won't get any sympathy from anybody, especially since you're getting paid a ton of money doing nothing!

Yeah. Very central. It's OK for him to pro*sti*tute himself for money but, not OK for the NHL owners.

GREEDY OWNERS? - Pot calling the kettle black here Zach. Way to run to the money instead of being loyal to your organization. As a Devils fan I hope you are locked out for the next 10 years so you don't earn a dime!

What annoys me about these NHL lockouts is that you will have the same teams crying foul in 7-8 years when the next CBA is up. This is all the NHL/Bettman's fault for expanding too much in the 90's and thinking that moving teams to Phoenix would benefit the league. Most of the expansion teams are the ones crying foul, along with a few established teams (Devils, Islanders), and we get another lockout.
It just annoys me that I can't watch my Flyers this year, because they have teams in Florida, Phoenix, and Columbus which will never have a solid fanbase and want total revenue sharing. Whatever they do on this CBA, those same teams will be struggling in 2020 when the next CBA is up and we'll have to go through this again.....
PLEASE CONTRACT SOME TEAMS!!!!

It's amusing to hear complaints about the players getting big contracts. No one is putting a gun to the owner's heads and forcing them to overpay for players. And, who among us would turn down tens of millions of $$? Anyone? Yeah, that's what I thought.
It's hard to blame the players for the large contracts that the owners are doling out. The Parise/Suter/Kovy/Bryz contracts are signed off by the owners of their own free will. It's an example of the kind of mismanagement and subverting of the CBA that has put the owners in their supposed precarious financial footing and it isn't up to the players to bail them out.
If the owners aren't happy with these large contracts then they need to stop offering them. They have the control and the responsibility for this.

Real people take real pay cuts in the real world...so get real!

When Parise other UFA's and RFA's signed their deals they either knew or were told by their agents that with a new CBA roll backs were a disticnt possibilty. They still signed on knowing that and made out rather well even if they have to give some of it back.

Real people take real paycuts in the real world when they are working for a company/industry that is facing financial difficulties. It's a little disingenuous to ask people to take a pay cut when league revenues rose from 1+ billion $ to over 3 billion $ and your comissioner has spent the last couple of years bragging about how much money was coming in. If you are going to ask for paycuts you should be crying poor not rich.
