Laraque: CHL spends more on sticks than education

08:37 AM ET 10.03 | More thoughtful and engaged in the game than many might assume from his days as an enforcer, Georges Laraque, now the Executive Director of the CHLPA, was recently asked just what the organization hopes to gain. "Everything that we say and that I say comes from the players that are on the board. They're talking about education. No kid came to me, or came to anyone and said that they want to be paid $1000/week. ... In the Quebec League there are over 45 million tickets sold and in the Western League there are over 50 million tickets sold. Then if you look at the stick budget, which is more than $50,000/yr how does that make sense? We spend more money on sticks than education."

George stick to doing those quality energy drink commercials!

For every year a kid plays in the CHL, they receive one year of paid post-secondary education...so ferme la bouche Laraque.

Do they want to go to school...or do they want to play hockey.....if they want to play hockey you usually need sticks...what does one thing have to do with the other....you want an education and play hockey go to college...

I always wondered what Donald Fehr would look like with dreads.

Plus, the CHL is doing their part for the economy by keeping those poor saps that make sticks employed.

I wouldn't call my neighbors to the south 'saps,' would I? More like some 9 or 10 year old kids in sweat shops in China or Thailand.

Not a lot of rocket scientists playing major junior hockey.

If Georges is concerned about education, that's great. Maybe, tho, he as Executive Director of the CHLPA, he can work on education programs that will actually benefit these guys later in life. Things like, oh...I don't know....money management, career counseling for after playing days are over, stuff like that? Just a thought.

That works so well for the football and basketball players at the collegiate level.

he is out of a job atm. he made up a new one. I think this is what u call an entrepreneur lol.

problem is, legally speaking there is no way to form a union with chl players because, well they are not employees of said teams lol.

this guy is lacking attention, just dont give it to him.

my brother used to call him Georges L'Arnaque ( traduced as Georges TheScam) when he showed up in mtl unable to skate/fight/ whatever else than pissing off the coach for 1.5 million a year.
