08:15 AM ET 10.04 | Robinson Cano has his flaws, but, these days, stepping up for the Yankees is not one of them. In the final 12 games of the regular season, with the Yankees locked in an intense duel with Baltimore to capture the division, Cano posted an other-worldly .484 on-base percentage and a .782 slugging percentage. ... [You] can't really dispute that Cano, who turns 30 later this month, is the Yankees' best player. For 2012, and for the future. This winter, the Yankees will pick up Cano's $15 million team option for 2013, a bargain, and then they'll try to hammer out a long-term extension that will keep him out of free agency during the 2013-14 offseason. They should try very hard to make that reality. Seven years and, say, $154 million sounds reasonable.

The smartest move the Yankees made was trading his best bud Melky before Melky had time to corrupt him.....

7 year extension for a 31 year old...worked well with A-rod, why not....

Exactly.

What sounds reasonable to the New York Post will probably not seem so to Scott Boras.

i really hope that the do sign him to a 7 year extension....by the 2016 season the yankees will have about 7 players making about 20mil each and all over 35 years old. sweet

We've been hearing they are old since 2000 and all they do is keep winning games.

Cano does look like he's bulked up a little.

Of course not. The Red Sox spend big time too. And frequently badly. The Sox ended up paying him $2,060,000 per win over the life of Dice-K's contract

Speaking of payroll Texas (payroll 120 mil) just got beotch slapped by the A's (55.3 mil payroll). I suppose we won't be hearing from StupidMoron for awhile.

What's tired about it?It being factual?

In my opinion payroll has nothing to do with it. I proscribe to the crapshoodity factor in sports as to why a team wins or loses.
