Pistons still talking to Webber

Former Piston Chris Webber said in a Sacramento TV interview Sunday that he expected to be playing "in two weeks." He wouldn't name teams but said a handful had offered him a spot. The Pistons have maintained that they are speaking with Webber and his agent but would only bring him back as the team's fourth big man. They also would need to clear a roster spot because they are at the league limit of 15. That means they would need to find a taker for combo-guard Flip Murray, who hasn't played since Dec. 12. The team is actively shopping Murray and has until the Feb. 22 trade deadline to make a move. Financially, the Pistons have the money under the luxury tax to bring Webber in after shedding Nazr Mohammed.

Webber would be a good bench guy who gives short minutes... the Celts could use him for a breather.

January 15, 2008  09:14 AM ET

He would be a good add for the Celts but I think it's either Pistons, Mavs, or Lakers for C. Webb.

January 15, 2008  09:59 AM ET

Pistons will take him back

January 15, 2008  10:23 AM ET

Personally, I have questions about this guy. He's been available for 3 months. Why haven't Boston, the Lakers, or Miami, or Phoenix picked him up? I think there's something going on that we're not being told about.

The price may not be right for Webber, but it is strange that no team has taken a chance on him yet.

January 15, 2008  10:51 AM ET

Hlly,

He doesn't fit in the Suns scheme. By the time C-Webb make it to half court the Suns would becoming back on D. Miami already have a nice PF in Haslem and adding him to such a bad team doesn't help either parties (they had Zo).

I understand your point about Boston, the Lakers, and the Pistons are the obvious pick. I think C-Webb want to play for the Pistons and that's it. I don't think there are concerns about his health.

January 15, 2008  11:13 AM ET

Weber is a loser.....I'd stay away from him

January 15, 2008  11:14 AM ET

hllywd i dont thin miami need to get any older. also he wouldnt go to a team that has no chance

January 15, 2008  11:15 AM ET

Webber knows his days are limited so I can't see him going to the Heat.

... then maybe the Suns would be the first team that gets Webber to play some Defense ;)

Im with SoFlaBoy on this one. CWebb only wants to play for Detriot. He has said that during the off season. That if he comes back it would be as a Piston only. He has mended fences with the Detriot community after the booster allegations. Lets see what happens.

January 15, 2008  12:30 PM ET

At 35 and with those surgically repaired knees, his physical condition will of course be a concern. But if he gives the Pistons 20-25 mins of good ball, he is worth the vets minimum.

January 15, 2008  12:37 PM ET

He wasnt bad for them last season, the team as a whole dipped in that Conference Finals against the Cavs. Anyone blaming Webber on the Pistons inability to get passed Cleveland should wake up. CWebb was brought in by Joe D as a complimentary piece, not the main guy. He is 5 or 6 years removed from that level already.

January 15, 2008  01:22 PM ET

Shedding Flip Murray for a few second rounders in order to be able to add Webber for the playoffs is not a bad way to go. Webber would have to be like Lindsay though, able to contribute immediately off the bench right when Flip needs him. If he can do that, it will make Dumars look like a genius. No Detroit fan has forgotten how bad Webber looked during last years playoffs. Maybe if he is only counted on for a few minutes instead of starting, he would be able to contribute.

January 15, 2008  02:32 PM ET

As a back-up center in Detriot, Webber would be able to contribute. I say he signs his last contract with the Pistons.

January 15, 2008  02:58 PM ET

Why would a good team pick up a buster like Webber??? I hear the T-Wolves could use a big stationary body...

January 15, 2008  03:18 PM ET

I think the Pistons should trade any combination of Brezec, Hermann, and Murray for draft picks (with any luck, one in the lottery from a team looking for a quick fix), even more cap space, and the room on the bench for Webber.

January 15, 2008  05:26 PM ET

Kredentialz, where are you? What's up with your Celtics? Have they hit the wall already?

January 15, 2008  06:14 PM ET

Reports say that Webber only wanted to play with the Pistons and was just waiting for the right opportunity...Personally, I don't think that Detroit needs him, but at the price they can get him, I am sure they will unload some dead wood to create a space for him...

January 15, 2008  09:01 PM ET

In the least, he's a big body for the playoffs. Possible brick machine, but you've got the take the good with the bad...
