What John Farrell would cost Boston

08:12 AM ET 10.05 | As a desired commodity, the price may be rising on John Farrell. If the Red Sox really want [Farrell] to be their next manager, it's going to cost them. Even though the Blue Jays haven't won in two seasons under Farrell and the past month in Toronto has been filled with controversy, a major league source said today that team president Paul Beeston will demand compensation for allowing Farrell out of the final year of his contract, especially to join an AL East rival. While the source stopped short of saying the Blue Jays would ask for something "significant," it's clear they would want "a decent player," according the source, even if Farrell tells them he would prefer to leave or refuses to discuss a contract extension.

The Toronto media has gone a bit crazy over this one...last night, there was the suggestion that the Jays should try to get Pedroia....as much as I'd love to see him in T.O., Boston management isn't that stupid (or desperate).

I'm still not sure what the media love affair is with Farrell. I would rather get someone like Dave Martinez or Sandy Alamar Jr. But if the plan is this big youth movement why not promote the manager from Pawtuckett as he already knows these guys and they played well for him.

It shows how little the media up there knows about baseball.

Totally agree. What has John Farrell done in his managing career that makes him a desired commodity?

I don't want the Sox to give the Blue Jays anything, just get a different manager

Um...this is a team that fired Terry Francona and replaced him with Bobby Valentine. They are that stupid.

If they want Farrell, take him. He's done JS for the Jays. At the very least, it was expected that pitching would be improved under him. Ricky Romero went from a potential ace to a joke. Bullpen is still terrible (blame on that is shared by both JF and AA). He isn't getting anything out of the young guys (Lawrie, Rasmus, Arencibia all took steps backwards this year). This was the worst season in Blue Jays history, even taking into account all the injuries.

This is going to be interesting.
After the Theo "compensation" fiasco, let's see if Sox managment learned anything.
Farrell may be worth a lesser rated minor leaguer or two, but nothing of real value.
If they can't strike a deal, then an option is to find a place-holder for a year until Farrell becomes available. Question is, who would take the job under those circumstances for just a year--Variteck?

Nobody takes the Red Sox job for a year. For that they might as well have kept Bobby.

Your right, he's never been to , or won a World Series.

Just this yearOmar Visquel made a few comments that this guy can't manage and the players constantly make the same mistakes.

Omar contributed eff all towards helping the young guys progress, which is what he was there for this year. I'm assuming Escobar's eye black was aimed at him.
