Fielder on Cabrera: 'The best ever'

[Miguel Cabrera's] historic Triple Crown proved overwhelming to the prolific as well as the pedestrian. "Do people really understand what he just did?" Fielder asked, his eyes widening. "You have to play at an extraordinarily high level every night over the course of 162 games. You're fighting fatigue, battling nagging injuries. You're facing more specialized bullpen pitching than before. There's a reason why this hadn't happened in 45 years. How people cannot look at what he did in absolute astonishment is beyond me." Fielder called Cabrera "the best ever."

Fielder fails to mention that in Ted Williams day there were only six teams in the AL. The best 24 starting pitchers in the league. With a 16 team league and five starters in a rotation you face the top 80. The mound was higher in Williams day, the lights not as good and on and on. Kudos to Cabrera, but Fielder does not need to be a cheerleader for him, history will happen and that is that.

True, but the population base we draw from is much larger. In Williams day only white Americans were allowed to play. Today we not only have all Americans,but we get the best from South America, Central America, Asia, and Europe. That is a much larger population base to draw from.
When I was a kid, if you had a guy throwing 90 MPH, you had a real power pitcher, and if you had a guy who could jack it up at 100 mph you had a once-in-a-lifetime weapon. Now they ALL throw 90 MPH, and every team has someone who can hit 100. And they throw those stupid bendy pitches, like a slider and a cut fastball, that hadn't even been invented until the last few years.
And then their is relief pitching. It used to be that a pitcher finished the game, no matter how poorly he was pitching. Hitters would hit about 400 from the 7th inning on, beating up on exhausted starters. No more. If the starter gets tired, they replace him with a fresh arm. Jim Palmer used to talk about his "variable chance fastball." If he was getting tired, then rather than wasting a good pitch on some guy at the bottom of the order, he would throw one slow and straight, and dare the batter to hit it. No more--if the pitcher is tired, he tells the coach to warm someone up, and he keeps firing his best stuff until he is relieved.
It is much tougher to hit these days.

Not a hitter, Mark Fydrich, talked to the ball, got down on all fours to smooth the mound. The 'Bird' was wierd, but good weird.Would throw back balls that "had hits in them."
