Playing overseas hurts players' cause

08:20 AM ET 10.05 | That players can play outside of North America also conjures up the question of whether they should play overseas. [What the NHL players are doing right now] is looking a little smarmy and hurting their cause. The players have been griping at how fast the NHL shut down the preseason, that it showed bad faith in negotiations, etc. Well, the players sure have been fast in jumping off to Europe to sign contracts there, haven't they? ... What happened to all that solidarity, the fighting for the common player, the "little guy?" Yeah, Joe Thornton and Rick Nash showed how much they care about the little guys among NHL union ranks, by running off to Switzerland last month for top dollar, living in a chalet in the Alps.

Yep..................don't risk your $$. Just put those European and average KHL guys out of work. All for you and all for you and all for you and.............. I guess those owners overseas are much more player and fan friendly eh?

Don't really do those when it's a lock out.

BS.
I've walked picket lines when locked out.
Big sign saying "Locked Out"
To keep scabs out or to keep the company from trying to do maintenance or construction work with external union crews.

With the media coverage I don't think an informational picket is really necessary, do you?

exactly. I jokingly made the same reference earlier, but I know the deal, believe me. My dad was a Teamster for 25 years. I've seen a few strikes and lockouts over the years

There's doesn't seem to be a lot of cohesion among the rank and file when players are running off doing their own thing or just staying at home doing nothing.

exactly, and the owners know this.

That's not what you said though.
But what if the league tried to use replacement players? The NFL tried that remember andsome players actually crossed a picket line?

I wonder how long will the bottom two thirds of the NHL players sit on their arses while the multimillionaires are earning cash in Europe? The vast majority of the players who are not pampered super stars stand to lose the most.

The problem here isn't that they are going overseas. The problem is the players claim they want more money or at least what they are making now, yet they are going overseas and playing for less than they would even with the decrease in pay the NHL is suggesting. Moving players total take from 54% to 49%, the players would still make more here than in Europe. The NHL's argument now to Fehr and the NHLPA can be: "If they can survive on the salary they are making in Europe then why can't they take that pay cut here?" Fehr's response can only be: "Because." There is no argument for the NHLPA claiming they shouldn't take a pay cut because they just did.

Guarantee players/Fehr lose, and settle for 50% or lower when dust settles. Anyone want to take other side of this bet? Point being, they could settle today and not lose millions between now and then.
