08:23 AM ET 10.05 | The cancellation of regular season games, while not unexpected, became officially dispiriting news across the NHL landscape on Thursday afternoon. The Blackhawks lose their first five games (Oct. 13 vs. Columbus, Oct. 16 at Winnipeg, Oct. 18 vs. Colorado, Oct. 20 vs. Detroit and Oct. 23 at St. Louis). Blackhawks player representative Steve Montador vented his frustration via email. "First of all, it's disappointing," he said. ... Jonathan Toews, in a text to various outlets including NHL Home Ice and the Tribune, said, "This seems to be our commissioner's bread and butter. It's almost like he is excited to take away hockey from the fans and the players just because he can." It's tough news, but not surprising news.

OH, I got it now. And the players scuttled last season's realignment which simplified the schedule and reduced travel costs just because they could............right Jonathon? When you got a Fehrless Leader they get a Poison Dwarf. It's in the CBA.

I'm now convinced the season's going to get cancelled. And these imbeciles aren't going to get reality through their thick skulls - losing a season's worth of revenue will not be made up for with a favourable 7 year CBA. You're just making up for losses from one lost season over that period. And if you combine two lost seasons worth of missing revenue - what in the hell is anybody gaining from this?

I've been trying to formulate this is my head, so forgive me if I don't articulate it properly;
I have gotten the feeling all along, (and it kills me that I agree with Fehr on this) that a lockout was not only management's Plan "A", but their only plan...which I'm certain was well known and orchestrated by Dwarfus Horribilius. (those that think he is merely a tool of the owners are only partially correct) So then if the off-season, they offer these wildly (pun intended) over priced contracts....now when the games (and with them, the paycheques) start getting cancelled, it looks like the players are now losing a boat load more money then they were before, and they may be even more inclined to surrender.

An intelligent approach is never allowed in these things. Only an "I'm tougher than you" elementary school blockhead approach. Of course, that comment is very unfair to 4th graders.

This one is going to cost them a LOT more goodwill than the last one did if the season gets scrapped.

I should point out that, from a Leafs fan's POV, a cancelled season would probably be the best thing that could ever happen. The chances of them getting the #1 overall pick (if the draft process is akin to 2005) would be huge, many contracts would expire or be 1 year from expiry, the youngsters in the system would be a year to the better after playing an entire AHL season with some established NHL'ers, and there are a LOT of UFA goalies next summer.

I'd think from a Leafs fan's POV it'd be best if they cancelled all future seasons.

Not to defend Emperor Bettman but he was already ready to negotiate the new CBA a full year ago....had the NHLPA put on their big boy pants this lock-out coulda been averted.

Which is why i have said all along - "Players - agree to 47-50 % immediately ! They are going to lose anyways , lose before you lose millions of dollars in missed payceques. 2 months from now they will look in the mirror at idiots for not accepting say 48% and a 10% roll back. Face reality, get to the table and play frickin Hockey !

This lock-out was inevitable.
Owners won both the NFL and NBA lock-outs. NHL figured....What the hell, let's do it too.

I'm of the ilk that getting a Nathan MacKinnon, picking up a few d-men, signing a goalie, ridding the books of Komisarek, Connolly, Lombardi and Phaneuf's awful contracts, and going hard after every damn UFA there is (Iginla, Getzlaf, Perry, Weiss are all UFA's next summer) would make them Cup contenders in 2013-14.
Who knows though. Maybe Detroit could wind up with that #1 pick...

How many lockouts did MLB win vs. Fehr though? The evidence was right there in front of their mother fracking faces.
