09:30 AM ET 10.06 | Sandy Alderson's definition of "quickly," when it comes to David Wright's and R.A Dickey's future with the Mets, could mean before the first pitch of the World Series is even thrown. The Mets general manager made it clear earlier this week a resolution on both players' futures could come quickly. A baseball source with knowledge of the team's thinking was more specific yesterday, saying it's conceivable Wright and Dickey will have new deals in place, at least in principle, by the time the World Series begins later this month. Wright and Dickey are under club control for 2013, but have indicated they will test free agency next offseason if they do not receive new contracts by spring training.

I'd sign Wright as quickly as I could, but would be concerned that Dickey's amazing year was a fluke.

Ha! I guess you and I think alike on this one.

The Mets were much like the Red Sox...they used smoke and mirrors to contend early on, then folded like a lawn chair in August.
Both could be decent next year, depending on the moves they make.

Good 3rd basemen are hard to find, so keeping Wright is a must. Dickey is more like Dempsey, a decent pitcher having a career year. He may want more money than he is worth, so moving him for whatever they can get would be the best idea.

He won 20 games this season; his previous best was 11. He struck out 230 batters this season; his previous best was 134. He had a career best ERA and WHIP and is 37 years old. Maybe this is just a sign of a guy who learned to master the knuckler, but I wouldn't bet a lot of money on it.

I'm not wrapped up in wins and Dickey's issue wasn't just run support. Dickey went 8-13 in 2011. He gave up an average of 1.25 runs per game in his 8 wins and 3.07 runs per game in his 13 losses. He was inconsistent, as knucklers generally are. He didn't have that inconsistency this season. The question is whether whoever signs him thinks he's gotten over issue or thinks this season was an outlier.

I have. That's my point. He pitched considerably better this season than he ever has before. He pitched much more consistently this season than he ever has before.
