A punter's average distance is basically irrelevant, any measure of yards gained is always a "give or take a few" proposition, and please don't get anyone started on "quarterback rating." Still, if you ask players and league insiders, the most maddeningly imprecise football statistic is something that seems simple enough: the tackle. In theory, players are awarded tackles when they bring an offensive player to the ground. ... [But unlike completions or interceptions,] tackles are granted in split-second judgment calls by a scorekeeper hired by the home team. In many cases, this decidedly analog system creates some results that leave the players scratching their helmets.
