11:46 AM ET 10.09 | Dominik Hasek is once again calling it quits. The future Hall of Fame goaltender has retired from the game of hockey after efforts to make a return to the NHL have fallen short. The 47-year-old had talked with both the Carolina Hurricanes and Vancouver Canucks, but for various reasons neither team decided to extend an offer to Hasek. He retires from the game with six Vezina Trophies, two Stanley Cups, two Hart Trophies, and Olympic Gold.

Agreed. It really is a shame when great players stay on too long and wind up hurting their reputation a bit. Willie Mays was the best example of that in my lifetime.
