Clay Matthews attacks NFL over Brian Cushing injury

the only logical conclusion to this move would be to knock Cushing out of the game

I miss the days of crack-back blocks. There is nothing funnier than a guy who makes his living trying to injure members of the other team whining about how unfair it is that somebody hit him hard, and might have hurt his chances of finishing the game--or the season.

loved the crack backs too but chop blocking is going for the knees and that we could do without. these are guys livelihoods we're talking about quite a drop in pay from 1st round pick to assistant coach at Podunk U

Two hand touch would be the only solution anyhow.

If the said player were more "athletic", he could have jumped over the block.

Jeeeez....I did not see all these posts when Bernard Pollard did the exact same thing to brady..in fact the NFL did review that hit to brady's knee, and said it was a perfectly legal hit. Now in 2009/2010,,,they then said,,you can no longer go for the QB's knees, but only the QB.

But hey,,,chicks dig scars,,,and thats what happens in the NFL.

B/c it's so easy to jump when a blocker has a hold of you and you can't see the chop block comming, right?

Fine him, suspend him

Green Bay Packers linebacker, and former teammate of Cushing, Clay Matthews is calling a double standard when it comes to player safety in the NFL.

It starts in your own house, Clay. If you can't get the union on board, then I don't know what latitude you can ever have. Hard to talk about respect for the game when you don't respect each other.

Not just their livelihood but their lives. They're going to hurt increasingly as they age no matter what and a knee injury is going to change walking. For all his sanctimony, Matthews is right: there should be no double-standard. No chop blocks.

Isnt this why they get paid MILLIONS?? They have an inherently dangerous job, they all signed up for it and get paid handsomely for it. The element of danger is partially why they get paid stupid money...I dont wanna hear that whining. Get a desk job like the rest of us then. I dont have to worry about the mailroom guy coming to take my knees out when I drop something off at the mail center. I dont have to keep my head on a swivel in fear of the janitor coming to blindside me while using the microwave in the breakroom...cry me a river Clay

Well, then Clay needs to offer a solution. More rules? More penalties? Less contact?

I didn't realize Cushing had actually been badly injured when I posted about crack-backs, or I would have waited for a different occasion. My point remains that the players who are proudest of their ability to destroy others, are also among the first to complain when someone does something that risks destroying them. That's not tough, not brave, not cool, not courageous--just thug-like and contemptible.

I would like to see sportsanship, and players trying to play better football than the other team. I would settle for no helmet to any body part, no chop blocks, no crack backs, and all linebackers wear tu-tu's. OK, the tu-tu part is a negotiation ploy.

No, they get paid millions because our economic system is a bit tweaked, and it drops lots of money in odd and soewhat unpredictable places. Fifty years ago, the system didn't drop that kind of cash on athletes. Today that is where the money drops, and they are working very hard to scoop up as much of it as they can. I don't blame them.

I like your point about not having to worry about the guy from the mailroom trying to take out your legs, though. It is a good thing.

I know !!! I think it is time for the NFL to reconsider using added protective gear as in the form of bubble wrap .. I think the real double standard is how players defend other players that are being accused of trying to permanently injure opposing players for money , and then turn around and claim they are not being protected by the league when they get injured.
