Book of Parcells aiding Pioli's downfall

08:00 AM ET 10.10 | Fans in Kansas City are justifiably restless after spending so much time in the AFC West basement, and many are turning their attention to Scott Pioli. [The Chiefs] finished in last place in 2009 and 2011, and is currently in last at 1-4. Not helping matters is the incomprehensibly stupid approach that general managers shouldn't talk to the media -- advice from former NFL coach and Miami Dolphins head of football operations Bill Parcells to Pioli and others, according to two sources familiar with the relationships. ... That advice was so good that people in Miami are still asking whether GM Jeff Ireland, a guy Parcells hired himself when he was running the Dolphins, will survive this season.

Another who cares.

'Grocery Shopping With Bill' would make for a nice title for a Parcells' literary masterpiece.

<vision of Bill pushing a shopping cart wearing those FUPA shorts he is famous for...>

I'll pass. Maybe Cliff is interested in another literary foray, though.

So, what's in this Book of Parcells?

"And it came to pass that Jonah was cast into the sea,
And he was swallowed by a Big Tuna...."

or is it

"3 cans of Chicken of the Sea Tuna, drained
2 stalks of fresh celery
1 can Campbells Cream of Mushroom Soup...."

That's when you look around hoping to find the fashion police.

Touch me with that hand again and you're not getting it back....

Jessica Simpson STILL wonders whether 'Chicken of the Sea' is tuna or chicken??

I'm not clear how talking to the media would have caused either Ireland or Pioli to make better player personnel decisions. This sounds like sour grapes from a reporter who couldn't get an interview that he wanted.

Not talking to the media is probably good advice, as it keeps the media focus on the team rather than on the GM.

I disagree. Any good CEO will step forward when his company is in trouble and speak about the vision, the future. The owner is not the CEO, unless it's a dual position as in Jerry Jones case. Parcells "best practices" are like any other in business. If you don't adjust your model to fit with the changing marketplace, you will suffer the consequences. The market in the NFL has changed in that we have a 24 hour news cycle that drives a ravenous fan base in want of information and the ability to express their opinion. Right or wrong, that's the way it is. It was far different when Bill ran the Giants. His epic failure in Dallas and Miami are indicative of a man who didn't want to adjust to the changing times. Hopefully, Pioli is smarter than that.

But i forgot to say that I DO AGREE that speaking with the press would not have affected their personnel decisions. It just might have lent some clarity to the process behind the decison and perhaps calm down the questioning fans.

Remember Monica "holding" Bill's cigar ? Perhaps Jessica has been "holding" a chicken leg.

OK, good points. DO talk to the media, but hone those PR skills first, and make sure to stick to the message. Mgmt shouldn't eclipse the players and the game as the story, but may need to be a part of the story.

Amazing how Parcells still makes any kind of headline. The reality is Parcells is and always will be highly overrated , I know he has a big following along with respect from others around football ,but can anybody really remember the last time this guy contributed in a positive way to an NFL team ??
