Why Pistons won't add Webber

The Pistons have not completely shut the door on bringing Chris Webber back this season, though it's still a long shot. "We don't have a roster spot," said John Hammond , Pistons vice president of basketball. "If we did, then that is something we would look at." This has been the Pistons' stance all along. If the Pistons can move Flip Murray , Primoz Brezec or both, president Joe Dumars could look to add Webber.

Looking at last years playoffs, does Webber really give you something that Brezec doesn't?

January 16, 2008  08:11 AM ET

Might as well get Moses Malone out of retirement and be their center.

January 16, 2008  08:29 AM ET

Maybe they won't add him because he's slow and can't jump?

January 16, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Why Pistons won't add Webber...

Because it worked out so well last time?

January 16, 2008  09:15 AM ET

Lakers could use him

January 16, 2008  09:16 AM ET

A lot of ignorant people who didnt watch hoops last season????

He played well for the Pistons last year and he even helped them win a couple games after signing......They caught fire and finished the season on a ht streak

January 16, 2008  09:35 AM ET

djroxalot,.. befor you call a bunch of people ignorant, please make sure you know what you are talking about...

Webber looked awful in the playoffs last year. He looked confused and old. Now he wasn't the only Piston that struggled, but Pistons play for championship every year. If a guy can't perform well in the playoffs, its hard to justify a spot for him.

With that being said, he was ok during the regular season as a starter, but inconsistent. I think a bench role would fit him nicely and allow him to contribute into the playoffs this year, with the right fit.

January 16, 2008  09:37 AM ET

I agree with DJ on this one. C-Webb is slow but he understands the game and his role. I think he can give you 20-25 minutes 8pts, 6rb, and 2ast easily.

Yes the Lakers could use him NOW!!!!

January 16, 2008  10:12 AM ET

There's a reason Webber was released. Has anything changed that would make the Pistons reconsider? I'd say it's the same reason noone is beating down his door. With so many teams needing to add pivotal pieces, if he had something to bring to the table, he wouldn't be available.

January 16, 2008  10:27 AM ET

Webber needs to hang it up. He's done.

January 16, 2008  11:08 AM ET

i think ive seen this rumour 28 times... pistons would have signed him by now if they were going to... he probably wants to go there so therefor he wont go anywhere until the pistons tell him for sure they wont get him

January 16, 2008  11:30 AM ET

They might wait till the last minute just so he's somewhat fresh for the playoffs... but I don't see it happening. Bottom line, they don't really need him. They have all the pieces that he could bring to the table, so why sign him?

January 16, 2008  11:51 AM ET

Webber wasnt released. He was only signed for the remainder of last season after his buy-out with the Sixers. Thats why he was a free agent again this off season.

He did say during the summer, it was the Pistons and no other team he would play for again. If Joe D doesnt call, he should call it quits. Career 20-10 aint bad. Plus hes made his millions. Do a Jalen and be on TV, CWebb.

January 16, 2008  12:08 PM ET

Now he wasn't the only Piston that struggled - biminator

That would be Prince and Billups too. I like Tayshaun, but he was awful in that pivotal game 5 in Detriot, where LBJ went off. Prince was for 4 for 13, with 10 points. Chauncey was 6 for 13, finished with 21.

Im not an avid Webber fan but to be fair to the guy, he did play a decent game 5, going 9 for 13 with 20 points. On Game 6 at Cleveland, Prince was 1 for 10, finishing with 5 points while Billups finished with 9 points in 44 mins. Webber finished with 13 in 26 mins.

If LeBron didnt go ballistic in the Game 5 miracle, Pistons would have been the one wrapping it up in Cleveland in Game 6. And everyone would be talking different.

January 16, 2008  12:18 PM ET

Webber with the Pistons, was at best, their 4th scoring option behind Billups, Hamilton and Wallace. Some may even say, 5th scoring option after Prince. I agree, he wasnt much of a factor against the Bulls in the 2nd round (he was outplayed by Big Ben) but he averaged 11.5 points in the Cavs series. Not bad for a 4th or 5th option. I gotta agree with marlboro, Prince stunk it up against the Cavs.

January 16, 2008  12:21 PM ET

As SoFlaBoy says, in spot minutes, he would probably give you another 8-10 points a night. Not bad help off the bench.

January 16, 2008  12:26 PM ET

Good stats marlboro. I agree with your last sentence. This would be different talk if they won that game 5 at home. I think they would have closed it in Cleveland too. Probably still wouldnt beat the Spurs. But at least they would have made it interesting.

January 16, 2008  12:33 PM ET

IF the Pistons had played to their potential, what LeBron did wouldn't have mattered. IF your aunt had balls, she would be your uncle. IF is a piss poor explanation for what happened.

January 16, 2008  02:02 PM ET

" IF " is a constant in every aspect in life, including sports. From IF comes reparations and adjustments. Hence, Joe D's move to ask Saunders to give the younger Pistons like Maxiell, Afflalo, Amir Johnson and Stuckey meaningful minutes on the floor.

Pistons bench is learning and producing; They are more athletic; I would like to see some minutes for Murray, but they don't need Webber. Thanks for a decent season last year, but no thanks.
