Cal All-American going pro

DeSean Jackson, an All-America receiver and returner, will forgo his final season of college eligibility at Cal and enter the 2008 NFL draft, he announced Tuesday via teleconference. As of late Monday, Jackson's father, Bill, hadn't seen his son all day and wouldn't hazard a guess on his decision. Even Jackson's brother, Byron, said he never could get his brother to broach the subject in a series of video interviews. Still, the decision appeared obvious to outsiders. Jackson, a 6-foot, 172-pounder who runs the 40-yard dash in sub-4.3 seconds, is expected to be picked in the first round of the draft.

He had nothing to gain by coming back.

Jackson was a disruptive force in the CAL locker room this year and may have contributed to undermining the team effort in the last weeks of the season. He had a very poor year relatively - reporters have called it "underwhelming" - and he's cost himself $$$ by coming out now: he will be picked lower if at all in the first round. He reminds me very much of a young Randy Moss: full of talent, but very, very immature. Good luck to the team that gets him. He can be great or he can be a bust. CAL is MUCH better off without him going into next year.

This seems to be the best decision for both school and player.

We all saw this coming, this is why he didn't go to SC, he demanded to start as a freshman and was fully aware that USC had a young Dwayne Jarrett, Steve Smith and a commitment from Patrick Turner. He made it clear he would leave early. And he did nothing in three years against SC because he's not that tight.

I also remember reading that he wanted to wear the number one jersey. Pete didn't promise it to him. That p'd him off.

LOL it did! And Patrick Turner didn't think Desean was worthy.

And who can forget when he did the Reggie Bush flip at the Army High School All-American game. Too bad he landed at the one yard line. The coach took him out and he cried on the sideline.

I will never forget that. It reminded me of an episode from Married With Children when Al played against the First Ladies (which was full of NFL ringers) and spiked the ball at the 5 yard line because he thought he scored and he always wanted to spike the ball.

I stand by my earlier statement that by going pro he has nothing to lose, but the more I think about it NFL GM's are going to see the prima donna in him.
