Phillies may chase big splash signing

08:12 AM ET 10.11 | Philadelphia General manager Ruben Amaro Jr., as always, has some expensive options in front of him. [Amaro] hasn't met an offseason or a trade deadline where he hasn't made a big splash. With a long list of outfielders available, there is plenty of big-splash potential. Amaro also has some money to burn after cutting ties with Hunter Pence and with a TV contract looming in the near future. With all of that said, don't bet against Amaro landing one of the big fish in free agency. With centerfield being an absolute need, B.J. Upton and Michael Bourn would qualify as a typical Amaro big splash.

The Phils need to splash quickly because of the age of their most important position players. To me there biggest problem is to many journeyman career players and not enough younger and more athletic players.

wiseup: The phillies have some talent that they could trade and reload in a shorter time frame. By trading Rollins, Utley, Pierre, Lee ,And Halliday, they could get a load of younger more athletic replacements for those above. All five above are into their mid 30's. by trading them now the Phillies reload time would be much shorter. with that talent out if a decent pitcher perhaps Grienke thensign him.

The window is closing fast. Problem is, how do you trade some of those contracts? You eat a lot of money in the deal. Between a rock and a hard place.

Tampa Bay is the template (for everyone other than the Yankees). The lesson needs to be learned in Philly, Boston <sigh>, and L.A.

It's common knowledge that teams acquire Guillen via trade.

The Nick Punto trade with LA suggests that Boston may have learned the lesson.

Can only hope. Still it's going to be a long gruelling haul. Just hope it's not 86 years again.

bj upton can be a problem for the phillies because he has been in the american league most of his career, michael bourn can be the right player to sign in the phillies franchise,

Upton can also be a problems for the Phillies because he's an average baseball player.
