Rams rookie K destined to break records

08:04 AM ET 10.12 | Don't think for a second that John Fassel hasn't already pictured it. The ball will be somewhere on the horn of the Rams' insignia in the middle of the field. The goal posts will look like a pair of luminous toothpicks lost in the roaring fans. And Rams head coach Jeff Fisher will glance at Fassel and nod his head. Send in the kid. It will be a record field goal, no doubt. Maybe 64 yards. Maybe 65. ... [The] ball will be snapped, the holder will put it down and Greg Zuerlein will plant his left leg and swing his magnificent right foot. In one mighty swoop, shoe will smack against ball sending a tiny brown streak climbing toward those distant poles ... "Oh yeah, I definitely want to know if he can make it," Fassel says. "And he does too."

With Jeff Fisher as your coach... Dang right a kicker will thrive. Fisher's nickname in Tennessee was "Field Goal" Fisher. Among other names.

"Here's the snap, the hold is good, it's up....the gun sounds...it's good! It's good! Zuerlein has broken the record! A 65-yard-field goal."
The Rams avoid the shutout and lose 31-3.

Why, thank you Otis. I liked it. I do miss Tom Dempsey and his no toes, squared shoe kicks though.

Dempsey was one of the last "straight ahead" kickers, right? I remember my father pointing out Jan Stenerud (or maybe Pete Gogolak) as the first "sidewinder" kickers we'd seen. There may be people reading this who have never seen a straight-ahead kicker in action.
Damn, we're old.

LOL, good point, this kid can kick them further than Tom Dempsey, Tom was born without toes on his right foot. He wore a modified shoe with a flattened and enlarged toe surface.

Yes he was. Lou Groza style. Ya had to be there. Pete Gogalak, and his brother Charley, were the first soccer style kickers. It was the Giants signing Gogalak away from the Bills that raised the bidding wars between the NFL and AFL and sped up the merger.

Hey, when you have a field goal kicker like "Greg Zuerlein", I don't think it really matters what you call a coach, as long as he wins.

just a thought................. would dempsey be allowed to kick with that shoe today? would it be against the rules to use that piece of equipment to gain an advantage? kind of like using to much stick-em or steroids?
