08:17 AM ET 10.12 | Credit Tom Ricketts, chairman of the board of the Chicago Cubs, for his optimism when it comes to a franchise more associated with pessimism. In a lengthy letter sent to season-ticket holders, the Cubs' top executive gave an update on the team's entire system, including projects in both the Dominican Republic (building a team complex) and Mesa, Ariz. (a new spring training facility). Ricketts ended the letter with this promise to the season-ticket holders: "In the end, we (Ricketts and his family) are fans and our goal is to win. We're committed to building a champion the right way. The franchise has imparted on a path that will present challenges along the way but the destination is promising."

A nice fall jack up by the chairman to the ticket holders, but you can't fool these fans with your new spring training complex, still have a lot of baggage to get rid of, the Astros have left the division, and it fail to mention if you are raising your ticket prices for next year.

There should probably be a rule that if you lose 100 games.....you aren't allowed to raise ticket prices the next year.

I actually like what the Cubs are doing. They should have started rebuilding after the 2009 season. Instead Hendry continued to overpay for players to come in and underperferform.

Those bad deals had nothing to do with Ricketts though.
