The Red Sox have decisions to make on Jacoby Ellsbury

02:24 AM ET 10.13 | It's safe to say that 2012 didn't go as expected for the Boston Red Sox. After trading off Kevin Youkilis, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez and Carl Crawford, they've moved into a rebuilding mode. That puts them in an awkward position about what to do about Jacoby Ellsbury. His talent and contributions to the ball club are obvious, but he could have more value as another piece to sell off. Could he be traded? Will they keep him as part of the next reboot?

Make him a reasonable offer on a multi-year extension and when he (Boras) rejects it (which they no doubt will) tell him he is playing for that big FA contract he and his slimeball agent covet.
The Sox can entertain offers for him (as a rental) as the trade deadline approaches.

I am a loyal Sox fan for almost 40 years...but I say trade Jacoby. He has been injured two of the last three seasons. Get what we can for him, which should be a lot.
Trade him to Arizona perhaps for Justin Upton, and sign BJ Upton to play CF.

wiseup: The Red Sox would pay Ellsbury a big contract then trade him to the yankees. If Ellsbury goes to free agency, boros and Ellsbury will have Yankees first on their list. I could see RedSoxtry and trade him to Texas,Detroit,Phillies, Or the Dodgers, anybody but Yankees, just for spite.

First he and Boras can forget about getting big bucks....too many injuries....the only way he gets big money is through an incentive laden deal....

Time to trade if they can get any value.
He's had one outstanding season and two recent seasons where he missed most of the games due to injury. Didn't come back from injury this year and impress anyone. He's brittle, and with Boras as an agent he's not worth keeping around if they can get anything for him.

Trade him for a starting pitcher prospect. Be patient. Aim for 82 wins next year, and plan for a real rebound in 2014 (or possibly 2015). It is time to face the facts.

You are correct. Once Swisher is out of there payroll will go down. Trades involving guys like Nova and/or Nunez will be looked at. I would not rule out them shopping Granderson on his last year of this contract this winter. Obviously this Yankee group has topped out and there are only so many of those contracts you can move.

Jacoby Ellsbury is signed for 2013 at $8.05 million next year , not a lot of money comparatively, and then he will be FA. He is going nowhere. The Red Sox need him, even if only one year. Add in Boras is his agent, and what team wants to walk into that mess in a year?

I think you are right. His value is down right now due to injuries, so the Red Sox are not likely to trade him now. Next year he will play (for the Red Sox) for the big deal. Red Sox may shop him at the deadline next year if he is having a big season, but right now there is no point in trading him.

If I were Ellsbury,I would not sign any contract until the end of next season, if he makes it thru the Season without an injury, he will up his Value!

Understand your thinking, but can't agree.
They need pitching, and if they can get a decent one for Ells they should go for it, since he's only good for another year in Boston. They can find a CF for a year or two on the FA or trade market, and wait for their minor league kids to produce a CF player.
Ells production this year after returning from injury was not impressive.
