Redskins wanted Kyle Orton to backup RGIII

08:53 AM ET 10.14 | It appears the Redskins dodged a bullet with Robert Griffin III's health this time, but they might not be so lucky next time. And that explains why the Redskins quietly made a strong push to sign Kyle Orton in the offseason. Given RGIII's playing style and his size, the Redskins knew they would need a strong backup. One front office man said the Redskins offered Orton more money than he was paid by the Cowboys ($10.5 million over three years), but Orton preferred the Cowboys in part because he didn't want to be beaten out by a rookie, which he knew would have been inevitable.

That's subjective.

Depends on whether or not you consider rushing a guy back from a concussion and "dodged a bullet with [his] health" to be synonymous.

And I'm pretty sure the NFL is still probing the Redskins handling of last week's injury report.

It's nice to have a thread about a Purdue guy.

But it's even nicer to talk about a big Notre Dame win! GO IRISH!

30 other teams wish he was their back up QB too. Heck, he is better than quite a few starters. He is not in the business to be a mentor for any rookie QB at this point in his career.

Join a team destined to be last place in the division or join a team with a shot. Dallas has it's problems but Washington has it's Shannahan's.

I still wish the Bears would've kept Orton...

Orton could not possibly have served as mentor, since his QB style is very different from III's. What they need in DC is a QB coach tailored to III and his style to bring it more into line with NFL survival. Can't play balls to the wall anymore, Robert, got to be discreet.

Amen, amen, I say. Although Campbell is an upgrade over Caleb Ain't he.

Rah, Rah, Redskins!!!

In the old days, a QB was not allowed to run the ball. The owners went beserk when they did. They were supposed to stay in the pocket where it was a lot safer than becoming the next running back train wreck.
Now we have all these running and passing QB's and I got to think that each one, will meet their fate sooner or later. The body just can't take that punishment.

QUOTE(#18):

How were they supposed to keep Orton when they had to trade him for Cutler? Oh. I see. You mean you wish he was still the Bears starting quarterback. Doubtful. Cutler is still considered to be an upgrade. Orton may be a fine backup, but he was quickly run out of Denver in his only real opportunity to be a starter.

By Tim Tebow, I might add!!!

The article says, "the Redskins knew they would need a strong backup."

What team thinks, "Our QB stands in the pocket, we don't need a strong backup."

Everybody wants a strong backup. But wanting something and getting something are not the same thing. As in, hey, the Redskins did NOT get Orton, now did they? Guess somebody else "wanted" a strong backup. LOL
