09:13 AM ET 10.14 | The Fuel Mileage Monster. It zapped Chase leader Brad Keselowski and was benevolent to Clint Bowyer. Keselowski pushed it too hard and ran out of fuel with 58 laps to go and had to coast into his pit stall. Keselowski, who had led the most laps of the race, dropped to 14th, more than 15 seconds behind, and could never catch the lead pack. He finished 11th. "It was like playing blackjack," Keselowski said of the fuel mileage snafu. "Some times you're going to get a good deal but you're not going to win them all." Bowyer barely made it to the finish. He ran out of fuel before he got to Victory Lane.

Yes... the fuel BS made even the finish of the race more boring than the other 320 laps. Was so bad, I couldn't watch but say 5 min at a time. Did you notice how many North Carolinians knew in advance that it would suck, and stayed away?

Say what you want about FI -- the truth of the matter is, the crews can only "guess" what their fuel burn rate will be when ambient conditions change ... the PCU will adjust fuel consumption rate. At least with old carbs the crews had a better understanding what the results would be ...

I agree.. a boring race from what I saw.. fans do not want to watch a 'fuel mileage race'.. either on TV or at the track.. thank God for college football

I've grown weary of races being decided in the pits by computers. Let every race have a caution at a guaranteed fuel mileage point, with no position changes ...just tightening up, and let it rip.

as many FM races as BK has won, it was bound to bite him in the behind at some point

i'm cool with that.. should be a caution at half way point as well

I agree with the late caution, say at about the last 50~60 lap mark....then let them race, really race, to the end.

I see better racing in the morning school car rider line.

Then why bother running the other part of the race? Just make the race length less than a fuel run.

There are 2 problems from what I can see: the cars, and the points championship.

The cars are too stable in many ways and unstable in others. Once a car gets out front it's gone. And the drivers complain about not being able to pass when you get to another car because of the aero-push. Hopefully the new '13 Cars will fix these problems.

NASCAR needs to realize the biggest problem for their competition is the points championship. as long as finishing Top 5 consistently is more important than winning then you will have drivers play it safe. The easiest way to change this attitude would be to take all the prize money for winning the championship and instead increase the money for winning. Instead of having one big nail biting moment at Homestead you can have potentially 30+ moments as the drivers race for the big money at each race.

Can't disagree with anything you say. Perhaps one season under old points system, and no Chase as an experiment.

YES - YES - YES!!!!!

October 15, 2012  01:57 PM ET

Going back to the old points system would be excellent....better hard racing right to the end.......Kyle and Carl and Newman would sure like it..

October 15, 2012  02:00 PM ET

I wonder how we'd be for 2012 under old points...couldn't get answer from Google.

October 15, 2012  02:00 PM ET

Suppose Nascar had a race at their 'home' track and nobody showed up.

WAIT ...

Sad is the only word I can think of.

Must have made it easy for few that went to get in and out of the parking lot.

Wonder what this will do for the TV contracts that are coming up? I can see Nationwide going to Speed and the trucks getting parked forever.

Oversaturate the market and this is what happens.

October 15, 2012  03:27 PM ET

Yes, the stands were pathetic. Nascar needs to end their season before any football!

Delma...go to www.jayski.com for info on the old points system versus the chase format.
