Pereira: Notre Dame lucky to get OT call

10:23 AM ET 10.14 | Was there a Cardinal sin committed in South Bend on Saturday? Maybe two. No. 7 Notre Dame beat No. 17 Stanford, 20-13, in overtime. But in my opinion, the Irish had the benefit of two controversial calls that not only helped the Irish tie the game to force overtime, but also prevented the Cardinal from scoring the game-tying touchdown in overtime. Let's start with the the last play of the game. Here was the situation: Stanford had the ball, fourth-and-goal from the Notre Dame 1-yard line in overtime, with the Irish leading 20-13. Stanford running back Stepfan Taylor appeared to be stopped at the goal line, but on second effort, turned and fell into the end zone. The ruling on the field was that Taylor was stopped short and after a review, the call stood. I've looked at the play from every angle and I think the call should have been reversed to a touchdown. Forward progress was not ruled and there was not a whistle that was blown before Taylor was ruled down. The ball broke the plane before it came loose, which makes that aspect of it irrelevant. The shot that convinces me is the field-level shot from inside, not the shot from the outside that is down the goal line. Taylor extends the ball beyond the plane before the elbow is down. One thing you may not know: In college, the review decision is made totally by the replay official upstairs in the booth, not the officials down on the field.

No no no, we have to talk about who SHOULD have won, who sucked, and don't forget the most important thing ... who and who doesn't really play defense!

LOL, Doc, that was exactly what is was, "a great defensive game by both teams". Actually I was proud of Stanford for playing such a good defensive game and playing ND down to the wire in South Bend!!!

Very dubious OT win. Very dubious. Runner did look like he was stopped before the goal, but the whistle never came and he just kept writhing. Irish stole one, but wait till they play USC. The party in South Bend will be over.

Your right the runner was stopped, and that's when the play should have been blown dead. The only reason he wasn't down was because he was laying on a pile of bodies. How long does the defense have to keep him out? The right team won that game.

I rooted for the Irish. However, I do believe it should have been a touchdown. Everyone is acting as though Stanford would have won if the call went the other way. Not the case though. A second OT would have been better. ND was better in the red zone on both sides of the ball all night. A second OT would've made the victory less controversial.

I don't like ND so I don't watch them. Did see the end of the game when it was mentioned there was a controversy. Figured it had to go in favor of ND as usual. Seems Stanford scored not once, but twice and neither time were they allowed the TD. Those refs should be suspended. They are as bad as those so called refs Goody Godell had for the NFL. ND will get theirs as refs cannot carry them all the way.

I'd like to Stu...but even if he did make it on that last play, Stanford shouldn't have had to take it to 4th down and rely on a referee's decision. JMO
