Boston Red Sox sale looming?

02:18 AM ET 10.15 | It's been a tumultuous 12 months in Boston. Theo Epstein left for Chicago. Terry Francona was dispatched, Bobby Valentine replaced him - and was ousted himself. On top of that, the Red Sox started to rebuild after trading multiple stars. The next step may be the looming rumor of a sale of the historic ball club. Perhaps John Henry will stand pat. Perhaps he'll bring in a partner. While the Red Sox deny the idea, they just can't shake it off.

ESPN Radio reported a few days ago that they may be interested in selling a minority interest in Fenway Sports to raise some cash.
Apparently, John Henry's Hedge Fund loss serious value in the past year or so, and he wants to put some money into the Liverpool soccer club facilities (a la the improvements they made on Fenway Park).
Un corroborated rumor, but interesting, and makes some sense if his Hedge Fund is losing cash.

So...the strategy is to erode any value the team had and the sell at its lowest point? I'm no economist, but that seems like a bad move.

Either way, the Sox will rebound quickly. I like what Cherington is doing. He is a big upgrade over Theo.

Buy high and sell low.....think they got it backwards. They'll probably figure that out.

the redsox dont owe anything to this ownership..they have done a good job of sucking every penny out of the fans and selling the "nation" countrywide

Not sure I agree. Despite the steroids, Manny-antics, ugliness of 2006, collapse of 2011, I turn to mush whenever I re-live 2004 (and to a degree 2007). All in all its been good --sports in Boston, that is over the last 10-15 years. I haven't given up on this ownership, though I agree with Sulla: bring on the young guys with some additional talent laced into the mix. Torii Hunter (I know, he's 37 years old) springs to mind: Excellent clubhouse presence.

I'm not sure the value of the team has declined; the talent on the field has declined, but payroll is way down. They look like a team in good position to improve, and they should make money while doing it.
Investing in the Red Sox would be a bit of a gamble, because if the team doesn't improve fairly quickly their fan base will start to decline, but it looks like a pretty good gamble.

The fan base tends to hang in there in good times and in bad. Lord knows we had a long enough bad spell.

I could only see ownership selling once they have the team headed down the right path towards the playoffs once again. It's too big a challenge for their ego's to not see a rebuild through.

when the owner refuse to take responsability for cleaning the house, when the owners refuse to ackonwledge their culpability by making the wrong moves/ by trading away most of their top players didn't do any good to the franchise, by doing just that the owners just droped the franchise value to a lower number in the price for the team!!!

perhaps if the red sox sell the franchise that could be the right answer to the red sox slumps lately!!!!

last 2011 season collapse was ugly but it was not nessesary to fire theo epstein neither to fired francona, this type of move it was just like chopped the head off their team, shouldn't had been done anything like this the team could had have a better season this year!!!
