Matheny's bad habit

08:14 AM ET 10.15 | The Cardinals on Sunday nearly snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, watching a 6-0 lead dwindle down to 6-4 before shutting the door. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny was slow to activate the bullpen and dispatch an emergency tow truck to the mound to haul [Lance Lynn] to the dugout. ... [Six] relievers protected the lead. And they protected Matheny from having to answer unpleasant questions about squandering Game 1 because of his hesitance to yank Lynn. Game 1 shouldn't have been so close, and so scary for the Cardinals. Matheny stayed with Adam Wainwright for too long in Game 5 of the NLDS, but the Cardinals overcame a six-run deficit to grind out a 9-7 win. From here on out, you can only hope that Matheny learned from this.

It wasn't like Lynn was just missing with his pitches, instead the Giants were pounding the ball all over the place, and that what he has a pitching and bench coach to help him make these decisions.

QUOTE(#2):

I wish the Cards and Giants could BOTH lose.

The Cards or Giants didn't blow the ninth inning lead the Nats had, and they didn't help the Reds lose three gamers in a roll at home either.

Agreed. Lynn looked sharp for 3 innings, but then in the fourth for whatever reason, he wasn't fooling them one bit. I thought he was coming out at least two batters earlier than what he did.

Like the article says, hopefully Mike learns from those things and doesn't repeat them. He has a deep and potent collection of bullpen arms to rely on in this series. He shouldn't make the mistake of letting his starter go too long when struggling.

Lowly Tigers? What are you smoking? Not a single team that has made the playoffs in either league can be considered "lowly."
