Lockout's most critical issue

08:26 AM ET 10.15 | In the eyes of many fans, this lockout's on the owners. This notion that somehow there's a shared responsibility for the dark NHL rinks across the continent is, well, to borrow a phrase, a bunch of malarkey. One side, and one side only, has offered concessions in an attempt to settle this dispute and have a season. That's the players' side. ... The breakdown in share of revenue is critical, of course. Revenue-sharing is critical, of course. Systemic rights issues are critical, of course. But nothing is more critical toward an agreement than the NHL agreeing to honor all existing contracts that account for approximately $5.2 billion going forward by capping escrow on these deals in their entirety. That is the first step toward an agreement.

I now find myself in the very disagreeable position of (almost) agreeing with with something written in The NYPOST

All existing contracts honored, 50/50 split this year , 51/49 next year and all after, revenue sharing, current free agency terms, max 6 year contracts...DONE ! Now drop the fricken puck !

The owners gave out those existing contracts - and even with nuclear winter approaching - you STILL had owners giving out ridiculous 13 year / $100M contracts. Look, if the owners aren't smart enough to police themselves even WITH a salary cap - it's not on the players to once again take the hit here. And if teams that Gary B brought to non-hockey markets are in financial trouble, that's not on the players either. Gary B has been the one constant in these three work stoppages. Blaming anyone else is ridiculous.

by the way, these two headlines were consecutive on the SI website...what do you think?
Both of them may be, but one of them HAS to be wrong

Crosby believes owners bargaining in good faith
Alfredsson ripping owners for lowballing players
