08:02 AM ET 10.16 | On Monday, Lions general manager Martin Mayhew confirmed that Jahvid Best had not been medically cleared to return to the field, but coach Jim Schwartz remains hopeful. [Schwartz] said in a radio interview on 97.1 that there's still a possibility the running back could return this season. "There's still time," Schwartz said. "We don't have to activate him from PUP yet. There's still a couple more more weeks, then there's a three-week practice window. That time hasn't run out." Best is technically eligible to come off the physically unable to perform list this week. He can return to practice any time in the next 21 days, and if he does, the team will have another 21 days to add him the active roster.

He'd better leave it open. Otherwise, Best might run into it and get another concussion.

October 16, 2012  08:12 AM ET

It's a test. If Best can find the door, he's ready to play.

October 16, 2012  08:15 AM ET

Should have drafted some RB's, Mr. Mayhew.

The system in place for IR, IR-but-might-return and PUP is really designed for body injuries, not concussions. A doctor can look at a knee, for example, and come up with a pretty good estimate of how long it will take to heal. That's not the case with concussions. Best has been out since last November, while RG-III was back the following week.

Is he "leaving the door open" or "showing him the door?"

Or the o-line, Stafford's been running for his life this year

Jason Bay never recovered from His concussion, it's almost 2 Years and it's pretty easy to see what it can do to a pretty good athlete. It's a terrible situation, let's hope that Best gets better!

Look at Rivers picture....yeah, the guy that is a ringless QB and Elite QB, yeah, you know the one who's better the HOF Eli of the Giants. Yeah, where's that comparison? Gone out the window? I can't hear ya!

Best can't play any more. Three or four concussions already. One more helmet-to-helmet and he's got mush for red-blue-grey-and-black matter. Even at that, what kind of hell is looking at anyway post football?

Actually... for about 3-4 years now.

I think he should sit out the season. THe Lions aren't going anywhere. Having him not in the game will elevate Detroits position in the draft.

Currently the 49ers are in a situation where they are waiting on the status of Offensive Lineman Joe Staley who received a concussion while running down a defender that had just intercepted Alex Smith.

I'm sure that part of the decision as to activation is; "What is the severity of coarse and the likelihood of this happening again soon?". After all a punter or kicker would probably be OK'd immediately, QB's, OL, DL in my opinion not at as high a risk of having head contact as a WR, RB, LB, DB.

I know that the play everyone remembers Best being hurt in, where he launched himself 6 feet in the air to get into the end zone and was flipped in mid air and landed on his head was not listed as a concussion but a neck and back sprain, doctors OK'd him to play but his coach said NO to the remainder of the season and the Bowl Game they went to.

Unfortunately the door slammed into his face and he has another concussion. HA!

October 16, 2012  11:06 AM ET

I would play the guy and just get it over with. I believe all contracts have buy out clauses. You let him play. If he gets his bell rung, bye bye Best.
If not, you've got another weapon in your arsenal to fail.

Best should consider an early retirement while he remembers his name

Maybe they could add a "concussion" IR--week to week as long as necessary? I suppose teams might find a way to abuse it, but it would help in the short run, and it would help the league look good for the judge in the concussion lawsuits.
