12:40 PM ET 10.16 | NFL owners officially approved the sale of the Browns to Jimmy Haslam and his first order of business was making a change at the top of the organization. Mike Holmgren will retire at the end of the season, according to reports, and Haslam will be bringing in former Eagles executive Joe Banner to run the team.

number 1....see ya Mike

One of the most overrated ever.....

I used to love watching him have coronaries on the sidelines....

Retire is just Mike's way of saving face. He was absolutely terrible and the team never improved. Haslam looks like he wants to win and not just own a team as a hobby.

Yes, this is good for the Browns. Very good.

OLD news....NEXT!

October 16, 2012  01:12 PM ET

Hey wait a minute... didn't the Browns just beat their arch rival Bengals? Just kidding, Holmgren deserves to be fired... but I'm not sure the job is doable.

October 16, 2012  01:13 PM ET

Bye, Mike.

Some good years as a Head Coach. As GM or whatever he is in Cleveland, not so much.

October 16, 2012  01:14 PM ET

Banner is a good choice...

October 16, 2012  01:20 PM ET

Awful decision maker in Cleveland. Decided to put bandaids on gunshot wounds, he and whoever the GM is drafted at random apparently.

October 16, 2012  02:33 PM ET

The Browns are on their way up!!!

October 16, 2012  02:36 PM ET

You can't handle the draft as bad as Cleveland has in the past few years and expect to keep your job.

October 16, 2012  03:18 PM ET

A rich owner, in the salary cap era, why this is sure to work out. Just ask Jerry Jones. Or Dan Snyder. Or Zygi Wolf.

'bout time someone changed something about the Browns.

I'm glad Holmgren is gone because what has he really done??? His job was to bring in a GM and Coach and after that he was a ghost! He was rarely in the office and when he was he stayed away from the media to concentrate on counting his $.

As far as Heckert and Shurmur, I am glad they are staying for the remainder of the year and will be evaluated once the season is complete. I am pretty sure Shurmur won't make it back next year but as for Heckert the jury is still out. He found a couple solid players in his last two drafts and if Josh Gordon continues to shine he might have found the steal through the supplemental draft!

I heard a couple names being thrown out there today to replace Shurmur and of them the one that really stood out was Chip Kelly. It will be interesting to see where they go with their search and how they finish the season.

Before he got to GB it was decades since the Packers were relevant in the NFL. Plus he guided Seattle to the SB. Your statement is simply wrong.

He was a awesome coach but team president and GM, not so much!

It was clear Holmgren was done at the end of his Seattle tour of duty.

...and he figured Randy Lerner would be a GREAT retirement fund and jumped at the Cleveland job!!!
