Niners missing that special something

07:59 AM ET 10.17 | When special teams specialist Blake Costanzo was left to sign elsewhere, he left a hole in that aspect of San Francisco's game. One aspect missing from last year's successful formula? Stifling special teams. The 49ers constantly put the offense and defense in advantageous positions in 2011. This season, the 49ers have struggled. ... One reason always cited by "so-called experts" as Jim Harbaugh likes to call us is that the 49ers miss [Costanzo]. The 49ers had little interest in re-signing Costanzo and he eventually landed in Chicago. So are the so-called experts right? Let's go to the locker room. "We do miss Blake," fullback Bruce Miller said. "He was a heck of a special teams player. He had a great feel for whatever team it was."

Judging from what I saw Sunday, something was missing from their defense.
Oh - and their QB's weren't very good either.

Fumbles on special teams cost them a trip to the Superbowl last season.

The Coach has to let up a little and the players bond so that they can play more like a Unit!
He has to be more of an instucter and leader than a fighter, screaming didn't work for Singletary either!!!

And the game plan was a bit lacking, and the team looked uninspired.
They are likely to bounc back on thursday, though, and take out their frustrations on Seattle.

that something special is a QB that actually goes out and wins games, not manages them...

One thing the 49ers aren't missing are classy New Yorkers:
Headline Today: "New York Giants??? cars burglarized while they were in San Francisco, beating the 49ers"
It's a a helluva a town.

And Alex Smith is basically a mobile Trent Dilfer.... that's all he is... nothing more, nothing less...

I agree....Seattle shouldn't be taken too lightly. They're getting better every week, and that come back against N.E. will be a huge boost to their confidence.

Maybe Dilfer etc. were exceptional, but they prove you can win even a SB with a game manager, especially with good defense. (Not that that defense showed up last weekend.) Harbaugh was NOT an exceptional "star" quality QB himself, remember.

Yep...
Young Mr. Wilson is making plays. The defense is stout. And Marshawn is a BEAST.
The Giants provided the blueprint. Let's see if the Seabags can follow it.

Oh this is true but they also played with 2 of the GREATEST defenses ever behind them..not sure SF is on that level with 2000 BAL or 2002 TB. That was my point, you CAN win with an average QB but its very rare. Last few winning SB QBs: Manning (both), Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Rothilisberger, Warner...no average QBs on that list. You have to have that special guy i today's game UNLESS u have an all time defense to help you "manage" the game

I hope you are correct, but Seattle hasn't yet played well on the road, Maybe that will change on Thursday.

Niners will be fine , They had a terrible game against the Giants . I look for them to bounce back Thursday night against Seattle and expose Russell Wilson for what he is --GARBAGE.
