Mularkey urges change in Gabbert

08:02 AM ET 10.17 | Mike Mularkey, after spending the bye week reviewing the Jaguars' first five games, has found his way back to a familiar theme. He thinks quarterback Blaine Gabbert, who turned 23 Monday, needs to utilize his athletic ability and run more. Gabbert ran only 13 times for 42 yards with a long gain of only nine yards in the first five games. Mularkey thinks he can become more of a weapon with his legs. "I'd like him to run it more if he sees some place there to run," Mularkey said. "He has seen it hurt us especially on third down. It's really hurt us. The quarterbacks getting out of the pocket. He still has a ways to go. We know that but I like the direction we're going with him."

Yeah. There are 31 teams in the NFL who are thinking they need to protect the quarterback better, to make sure he can stay in the pocket and do his job. Skins fans want to bubble-wrap RG-III's head every time he takes off.
Perhaps Mularkey wants his starter to get clobbered to give him an explanation for why the team is having such a poor year.

From the Big Cat Country (a Jacksonville Jaguars online community) upon the release of Madden 13...
Surprisingly, Blaine Gabbert is not the worst rated player in the history of the Madden franchise. In fact, he's even rated higher than some other quarterbacks.
Gabbert's overall Madden 13 rating is a 74, one point lower than both Jake Locker and Christian Ponder, which undoubtedly means that Gabbert is a total failure. Gabbert also ranks one point lower than backup Chad Henne and two points lower than Tim Tebow.
He does rank higher than Ryan Mallett though, so clearly the Jaguars made the right decision.

Gabbert has potential, he's got move more swiftly to the left or right, he doesn't need to run, he needs to avoid the rush, once he learns that he will be fine.

Do the right thing Mikey. Keep doing what you are doing and draft a QB with that first pick.

That's his polite way of saying "I hope he gets killed out there so we can get a REAL QB on the field."

Too be honest he's too fragile minded to be an NFL QB right now... he's the perfect example of the rookie QB who should sit behind a veteran for a year or two until he catches up to the speed and know how of the NFL...

Mularky is part of the problem if this excerpt accurately presents his thinking. They need a new coach before they can evaluate the player talent level.

100% agree..Im sure you can remember back when studying under a vet was the norm and consider a MUST for all young QBs. BUT, the increase of salary along with fans who want instant impact have taken away from this...Look at how much better Rodgers and Brady are after sitting for a few years learning. This is how it should be done, IMO
