08:24 AM ET 10.17 | The pressure has shifted squarely to the players. A source told ESPN.com that there is a mechanism in place in the league's latest offer to defer payments based on future growth -- in other words, somewhat mitigating the players' financial pain in the first few years. The offer also will allow teams to go over the salary cap in Year 1 of the deal -- a maximum of up to $70 million -- as part of the transition rules, according to the source. NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced the offer Tuesday at the NHLPA's head office in Toronto, where the league and the players' union discussed core economic issues rather than continuing to focus on secondary issues.

So no rollback but a smaller cap (for now)? Good. Lets the idiot owners who gave 25 year contracts still suffer for their stupidity, while everybody else is now limited to handing out 5 to 7-year deals.

yep, i like this. The silly ones dont get off scott free anymore. Also closing up the Wade Redden, Sheldon Sourray situations, which is great. Ive always advocated that my Habs should be forced to either buy out Gomez against the cap or keep him. Im not a fan of a team just sitting a guy in the minors and having it not show up on the cap. Bad decisions SHOULD have consequences for the team that make them.
Other than that, I dont see why they wont have productive negotiations now. As I said from the beginning, the players were not going to budge even an inch until the owners made some sort of move in good faith. I seems that they are approaching an equitable solution.
I am VERY, VERY happy to see that the Wild will be stuck doling out a cool 48 million this season for Parise and Suter.
