Will Fehr pounce on NHL weakness?

08:26 AM ET 10.17 | Now what, Mr. Fehr? First, the NHL Players' Association boss could work off the NHL's proposal from Tuesday, understanding that the players could be painting themselves into a dangerous corner if they appear anything less than co-operative and interested in getting the season started, and start grinding away on the fine print and contractual language leading to an agreement by late next week. Or, second, he could see the NHL offer as a sign of weakness, as an indication Gary Bettman is feeling the heat of both hockey fans and his owners. And he might tell his membership that if they're willing to play hardball and extend this labour battle, a big victory could be at hand. Which way Fehr goes, nobody knows. Even the NHL is unsure.

Is it just me, or do both Donald and Bud have HUGE ties in that pic?

I'm guessing....trickeration.

Fehr doesn't see his job as resolving these issues and getting an acceptable deal for the players. His job in his eyes is to win agreement on all points including parking spaces for the players at the Arena and make the league grovel. OK, whatever floats his boat. But this seems to be a decent offer by the league and I see no reason to continue to delay the season. Unless, of course, the Donald can become the President of the Player's Association for the KHL.

I don't think Fehr's ever seen his job as having to "win", per se. The PA was miles behind the owners in terms of power, and he's worked to restore that. You think Goodenow would have ever seen a deal like this presented only a month in? Bettman knew he owned Bob. He respects Donald.

Being serious for a minute I mostly agree with you. Goodenow was inept as far as representing the players' interests........supposedly his job. Fehr is certainly more talented and able in that regard. I still have disdain for Fehr based on his time in MLB. Personally I believe that his efforts allowed the steriod era to take over in baseball for over a decade and due to Selig's laughable tenure etstablished the darkest period in baseball's history. Fehr better than Goodenow? Sure. But that's not a hard contest to win. You or I would be better than Goodenow.
I think ownership's goofy first offer was merely a trial balloon to see if Fehr would unexpectedly fold. He didn't, and won't. Now the test is to see if Fehr works to settle this QUICKLY since this last offer seems reasonably intelligent and fair. In addition, I hope that both sides start to work on a continuing basis to tweak conditions continually during the term of the agreement rather thatn starting to negotiate a month before it ends and move on to yet another lockout.

When this was all beginninng, I thought it was going to be very ugly, both sides' leader is a headstrong twit that has to prove how tough he can be. Now, it's looking like these same aforementioned twits have to prove how agreeable they can be, I sense owing to the membership on both sides. I think the main job they both are trying to protect may be their own

The question I have is; "did the NHLPA ever come to the table with a proposal of their own yesterday?"

They probably will by Friday. The owners said in order for this offer to stand they need an 82 game schedule beginning Nov. 2, with a 1 week training camp. That means this needs to be solved by the 25th.

That would be a sound - NO. I am glad the owners stepped up and got it rolling. We may have live hockey in a couple weeks. The challenge for me will be cheering for my mighty Flames while trying to forget all of Iginlas absolutely moronic comments during the lock out.

I'm not absolving Fehr of MLB's problems in the late 90s/early noughties. But this is a whole different beast. I think Bettman tried Fehr on for size, failed, and now wants to negotiate for realzies.

Honestly, if Fehr plays hardball for a bit and we get a slightly shorter season, I'm not so sure that would be a problem. The idea of an 82 game season starting in November and going well into June sounds ridiculous. I know the owners want a full season so they don't lose any more money than they have but maybe they will learn a lesson here that Bettman is hurting their interests with his penchant for lockouts and they will find a more rational commissioner. Not likely, but I can dream ;)

Is that going to be the DNC talking point du jour?

Of course not. The PA offered their proposal a while ago and the league responded with basically the same proposal that they initially came up with. Yesterday, the league finally came up with a real counter proposal to the PA offering. We will see what the PA has now.
