Golfweek's noose cover ignites controversy

Jerry Porter of USA TODAY reports on a controversial cover from Golfweek magazine, which focuses its latest issue on Kelly Tilghman's "lynch" remark. Featuring an image of a noose and the headline "Caught in a Noose," the cover is causing a stir in the golf world and was blasted by Tim Finchem, commissioner of the PGA Tour: "Clearly, what Kelly said was inappropriate and unfortunate, and she obviously regrets her choice of words," Finchem said. "But we consider Golfweek's imagery of a swinging noose on its cover to be outrageous and irresponsible. It smacks of tabloid journalism. It was a naked attempt to inflame and keep alive an incident that was heading to an appropriate conclusion."

How soon we forget Golfweek:

May Lynch: 3 to 6 Blacks This Evening" is the headline from the Memphis Press, Jan. 26 1921.

Public lynchings were common in America for much of the 20th Century. At its height at the turn of the century, two to three people, mostly southern blacks, were lynched every week.

Railroads ran special excursion trains to lynching sites, and thousands gathered to watch the beating, hanging, and burning of human beings. Spectators brought cameras and vendors printed photographs on the spot, minting a small fortune by turning the prints into souvenir postcards.

Golft week continue to show the shameless, festive carnival of lynching; during that time Women would have parasols, children lifted onto shoulders for the view, and large groups of men, all expectant and exultant.

FOLKS, just think, if she-dog hadn't opened-up her gutter mouth?

Yup, Golfweek made a mistake and unfortunately will sell more magazines for it. This was over; maybe they are absolutely desperate to sell magazines.

Theol' adage rings true once more...'money talks & BS walks...'

Golfweek has the right to be insensitive and irresponsible , , , it's their call. Although, it's their reputation as well and they should have chosen a different cover design. This was no mistake, this went through conceptual designers, writers, graphic designers, art directors and editors PRIOR to hitting the presses. Their primary goal is to SELL MAGAZINES . . . this will probably be their biggest seller.

just a company trying to make money...

It seems to me that the racially insensetive people are the ones who make such a big deal about her "remark". When you look at the entire conversation in context it would be a normal comment. I was not raised in the south, and when I thik of "lynching" I think of a western movie, set in the wild west, stringing up someone who doesn't agree with you. An unsavory way of dealing with a stubborn indiviual you can't defeat any other way.

http://speedingbulletnetwork.blogspot.com/ - perfectly stated and worded. Too bad not enough people will completely agree with this. But this is correct. Thank-you watchmen301. That's it. This is my first and last time on a golf section of fannation.

It was a brilliant cover idea, like you would've seen in Esquire in the sixties. Unfortunately, some people in the corporate ****-kissing golf world couldn't handle it, and one guy was made the scapegoat. May he find more lucrative employment somewhere where his supervisor has a pair.

this is so funny. first she didn't mean any harm by her comment. second, the person she was talking about (tiger woods) is not even black!!! yet, blacks are the one's upset about it. what if she said this about one of the white guys?
