Bowl may shut out Notre Dame

08:17 AM ET 10.18 | Ranked No. 5 in both polls, Notre Dame would be headed to a BCS bowl if the season ended today. [The] selection order for at-large teams would go as follows: 1. Sugar, 2. Rose, 3. Fiesta, 4. Sugar, 5. Orange. The Sugar and Rose jump to the front of the order, because they would each lose a conference tie-in team, No. 1 Alabama and No. 2 Oregon, to the BCS National Championship Game. ... According to one bowl insider, there's no way the Sugar Bowl would want to rankle anyone within the SEC at this juncture, so another SEC team would come off the board with the first pick. "There will be the most politics ever involved in bowl selections this year," the source said. An SEC-ND matchup would still be possible, but the source said the Fiesta would probably grab ND to match up with the Big 12 champ before the Sugar Bowl could choose again.

And there you have it folks. Bowl season ain't what it used to be. To heck with putting the best matchups on the field we have to worry about conference tie-ins and entitlements.

Because an SEC team will bring so much more money to New Orleans than will Notre Dame

I'm pissed that Slive is making the new Big-12 vs SEC bowl game the destination for SEC champions instead of the Sugar Bowl. No respect for tradition. I'm blaming the advocates for a tournament.

It's all about the money. Notre Dame with its strong national following will be most appealing to any bowl. Two SEC teams would be regional appeal but add Notre Dame and there is national appeal.

And to make it worse, IIRC, they are considering holding the dam thing in NOLA (but not yet settled). Where dafuqq is the sense in that?
