Pence unlikely to reprise pregame pep talk

08:08 AM ET 10.19 | Much has been made of Hunter Pence's fiery pregame sermon prior to Game 3 of the Division Series, which was organic. It came from the gut and would not have had the same impact had he planned it. He doubts he will repeat it before the Giants begin a new round of Let's See If We Can Survive Tonight. "It ran its course," Pence said in the quiet aftermath of Thursday night's 8-3 loss to the Cardinals. "There might be a speech. Who knows who's going to say what and what's going to happen? You never know when your backs are against the wall." At least this is a familiar wall. After losing Game 4 of the National League Championship Series ... the Giants are down three games to one.

Hunter must have learned his motivational playoff speech skills down in Houston...

Or maybe during last season's one and done down in Philly :-)

There aren't a lot of words to help you when you're up against a better team.

Nobody really had to tell the Giants that their backs were against the wall in Cincy, but let Pence take credit for this, but the bottom line is if these two teams played this series again the Reds would win 9 out of 10 times.

That's how Girardi probably felt against Detroit.

Looks like St. Loo again, but maybe a different outcome than last time. Tigers are loaded for...bear?

We'll see. The Tigers seem to face the Cards a lot in the WS. They've definitely got a more solid team this time around, and a damn fine pitching rotation.

However, NO HUBRIS.

Detroit has a good team that came together at the right time. NY has a good team that fell apart at the wrong time. I think the trading deadline deal that brought in a 2nd baseman and an extra pitcher probably gave Detroit the edge during the 2nd half.

I also liked the contrast between the way Leland handled Valverde's struggles, and the way Girardi handled ARods. Tigers have the better coach.

For all the criticism Leyland gets from both the fans and the media, I'd like to think so. Personally, I'm a big fan of Leyland... not that I don't question some of his decisions from time to time.

But the decision to relieve Scherzer in the sixth so the fans could stand and show appreciation was great.

I cannot argue with that.

That "raving lunatic" is a career .290 hitter going through an admitted rough spot since arriving in SF!
