What Hossa wants from Thrashers
Not only did wins over Pittsburgh and Detroit put the Thrashers in a first-place tie with Carolina before Thursday's game, but they also might help the team's chances of signing Marian Hossa to a long-term contract. Hossa's agent has met with coach and general manager Don Waddell several times. Talk has yet to turn to terms (money and length), Hossa said. That should give one an idea of how important it is to Hossa that he spend his prime seasons on a winning team. "Right now it's a matter of how the team is performing, and so far it's performing well the last couple games," Hossa said.

It is in the Thrashers' best interest to re-sign Marian Hossa to a long term deal, if possible, as he provides the one-two punch alongside Ilya Kovalchuk. Atlanta problemmatically starts slow every year and then turns it on in the standings about mid-season and then fizzles out in the last twenty games or so. In order to stay competitive in the NHL a team need be comprised of four solid forward lines including at least three bonafide elite players, ie-players with overall scoring stats in the top thirty. Since Waddell took over the coaching duties for the Thrashers they have proved on the upswing. In order to continue their ascension in the Eastern Conference they'll need Hossa bad.

Just because the team has won a few games recently, doesn't mean that they are a good team. Its not a team that draws free agents too often, meaning upgrades basically get done through trades. Plus, its a middle of the road team - at best - in Atlanta, no matter if they are winning their division or not. Does he want to sign up for a team that may make the playoffs most years, but really only plays 4 playoff games every year? He doesn't even know who the coach is going to be - what if they hire a Mike Keenan type that he can't get along with. I think this is just high hopes for the Thrashers organization...
