Slim chance for Cassell trade

Sam Cassell to the Celtics. Cassell to the Mavericks. Or maybe to the Suns. While the Clippers have fielded calls on Cassell's availability and talks could increase leading up to the Feb. 21 trade deadline, the chances of Cassell being dealt, as of now, are small. Cassell, 38, is in the final year of his contract, making $6.1 million. The Clippers are hesitant to take on any contracts beyond this season. Also, it is simply not a matter of the Clippers accepting draft picks for Cassell, because the salaries would have to be in the range of another player.

Instead of trading for the Cassell attitude, Flip Murrey could be had from the Pistons for nothing. He is serviceable and occasionally fantastic. Can create his own shot like Cassell. But like Cassell, doesn't know when to stop. Currently caught in a bench youth movement in Detroit. Light contract. I can think of worse players to be your 9th man.

Sam Cassell can be a valuable floor general for a contender. Don't over use him during regular season and save him for the playoffs and you will have savvy veteran pg. Dallas doesn't need him but Denver does, plus he is one of the few ex players that actually likes George Karl. A return to Houston would make that team better. Boston is also a good fit. Clippers need to let the veteran go.

"Sam Cassell could be traded, but we have no idea when or where." Why don't they just give us the facts?

January 18, 2008  10:22 AM ET

Because there are no facts. Besides, he had the chance to sign with other teams but he did the money grab and now he is stuck with the Crappers, err, I mean Clippers.

So long as the Suns aren't looking into it, I could care less where he goes.

i know someone that would want to trade for Cassell...the old folks home down my street...i heard they have a old man basketball league.....

cassell is great when all is going well for the team and he's a key part of the offense. absent either of those two conditions he's a real pain. for kg's sake i want to see the celtics win a championship and as much as i don't like cassell, i think he could help. unfortunately i don't know that the c's have the pieces to make the trade.

Skybill40;
We realize his past actions on the Suns, but everyone needs a second chance...America is the defacto place of a second chance..In our society, axe-murderers get a second chance, why not sam Cassell and the Suns do need a reliable backup to Nash...

Matrix: I fear that Cassell's conditioning would not enable him to effectively run the offense. You can only make up for so much with veteran savvy and guile. I see your point in him being an effective backup for Nash, but I'd like to think there's someone better out there.

Personally speaking, I've NEVER liked Cassell. I've despised him since his Rockets days and about died when the Suns traded for him in the Barkley deal. I liked Horry for a while but grew disgusted with his pompous attitude and his actions against his own team and coach. I like him even less now for obvious reasons..
