DeAngelo Williams deep in Charlotte doghouse

08:01 AM ET 10.22 | Certainly, the stats suggest that DeAngelo Williams seems to have stumbled into the Panthers coaches' doghouse. [It] also sure seems right now like the Panthers made an enormous overexpenditure on the five-year, $43-million contract extension Williams signed in 2011 if this is how the coaches are going to (not) use him. Williams carried the ball two times for 4 yards Sunday. Two times! He was hardly on the field at all. Jonathan Stewart started. Mike Tolbert played almost every snap when Stewart wasn't in there. Williams mostly stood and watched. ... Through six games this season, Williams has 173 yards rushing (29.5 yards per game). He seems decades removed from the back who ran for more than 1,500 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2008.

The key to a lot of Newton's success last season was taking some of the pressure off him with the running game. Without it, they're one dimensional.

The Panthers are 1-5. Seems like the whole team and the coaching staff belong in that dog house.

..... But then again, Newton's success didn't equate to "team success", so....

Put 'em all in the dog house!
The Panthers grossly over spent on him?? Looks that way now but not when he ran crazy in 08. It's the way it goes in sports. All that the Panthers can do is try to fix the situation or release him and eat the cash.

Like anything else, teams study films and understand after one season that good ol Cam is all about good ol Cam. He has never been a team guy. With that in mind, teams now just key on him running first, passing second. Once the D squares up and stays in their lanes giving Cam nowhere to run, he is forced to pass and its not so pretty.

How much have you watched the Panthers?? My guess is not much, you just dont like Cam for whatever reason...anyway
Deangelo is useless! But its Marty Hurney's fault for resigning him to a Matt Forte-like deal when he isnt that kinda back. He does not run hard anymore and his break away speed is on the missing persons report. Its not about Cam..its about the lack of creative play calling, TOO MANY DROPS by the WRs (yes, Steve Smith too) and ZERO protection up front. Any team can be shut down when your RBs average less than 2.5 ypc....drives stall bc 1st down runs get a yard maybe, 2nd down run gets 2 yds now its 3rd and 7 or longer....then of course the horrendous O-line takes a pre snap penalty so its 3rd and long..happens over and over again.
I just saw that GM Hurney was fired!!!! YES!!! The guy cannot draft past the 1st round and overvalues the WRONG positions...he paid 2 RBs massive $$ and made Charles Johnson a ton of cash for mediocre sack numbers and no run support. Never tried to get another CB, took a career backup safety and made him the starter. Sigh.....this team is in baaaad shape but sir, it is not all Cam's fault. He was the ONLY player that had fire in him yesterday. Maybe if Louis Murphy doesnt drop the 3rd & 15 pass that was on the money, the Cowgirls wouldnt have go the ball back for that FG

It's easy to blame Cam but the truth is, the Team has not played well and the Coaching is horrendus!!! Go Cam Go!!!!!!

Its funny how everyone is quick to say "Its a team game" unless we're talking about Cam...then its all his fault. Never mind all the sacks and hits he takes...and he is a mobile QB! That shows you the kind of protection he gets--very little. WRs cant run deep routes, RBs have no holes to run through and DEs just ABUSE Jordan Gross. His new nickname is "The Carousel" because D-lineman go around him all day! SMH

Apparently Jerry Richardson thought his GM wasn't even worth keeping in the doghouse.

I agree that it isn't all Newton's fault. He is not the only player to get that treatment though; recall Sanchez in NY, Blaine Gabbert in wherever the heck he plays, ARod with the Yankees, etc. Fans, with help from the media, tend to fixate on one individual and assign all the credit or blame to that person
I liked your points about the GM too, rewarding flash over substance and neglecting fundamental needs (such as decent CBsP) is a good way to wreck a team.

Thanks...its been very frustrating following a team that has NOT had back to back winning seasons...too many bad draft moves to post here without my fingers cramping but trust me, he has a MISERABLE draft record although they claim to follow the Steelers' blueprint. Yeah right! They draft players like Dwyer in rd 6 and Rainey in rd 5....cant remember the last time a pick outside of the 1st rd has been effective for us
