Troubling signs for Patriots

08:04 AM ET 10.22 | A win is a win, right? A win is a win is a win, except when you win the way the Patriots did [Sunday]. Then it's less a win than a mighty close shave at Gillette Stadium. Less a win than an ominous sign. Less a win than a troubling indication that these Patriots have become a flawed collection of players young and old who are well capable of turning nearly any opponent into a challenge and nearly every game into a dogfight. ... Please do not talk about a defense that bent but didn't break. It broke again this week against the 30th-ranked passing attack in football, just not as badly as it did the week before against the 31st-ranked passing attack in football.

It is a young defense, and they will have trouble until they gain enough experience to play well as a unit. The offense will have to carry them until that happens.

Two of the league's lowest rated pass offenses have lit up the Pats secondary in the last 2 weeks.

Damn... I would hate to read this article if they actually lost.

October 22, 2012  08:28 AM ET

I didn't see the game and the article doesn't SAY anything that would actually indicate what it's referring to...

Hail to the Redskins!

They played better in defeat than the Patriots did in victory.

The Pats pass defense plays too soft in the 4th quarter, like their primary goal is to keep the clock running, not to stop the other team and get the ball back. You can't win games by doing that.

October 22, 2012  08:44 AM ET

crap defense, average offense. Its doesnt matter. adam vinatieri isn't on the team anymore winning them superbowls so the qb can get the credit. No adam, no superbowl. Its not a coincidence.

October 22, 2012  08:44 AM ET

Seldom does the Herald know WTF they are talking about, but I will agree the secondary is a p.o.s.!!!

The Pats days are ova as champs until the rebuilding process is complete. Now on the other hand their is a reigning champ thats you cats need to be puttin in your mouths, they're elite, 5-2 and any big game is of no real concern for them as they always come out on top. You only have to worry about the non descript teams when they play them. They have a guy in JPP who looks like the identical twin brother of Bruce Smith, a terror, and he's growing. A complete nightmare for opposing teams!

Check the stats. Gostkowski has been the better kicker for years now.

It doesn't even say what team they played against...What did their opponent DO? Did they pass for 400 yds?

Now, a LOT of teams tend to play down to their opponent...you get so used to running a fluid offense against a fluid professional D that when you suddenly see utter chaos and stupidity on the other side of the ball, you get confused and wonder where if you're in the right place...If I was Tom Brady and I see the Jests on the other side, I'd be wondering if my team took a wrong turn and showed up at a CFL game accidentally...

Skins fans know that....we used to get up by a score or two early and then play the last 3 qtrs in the prevent nothing D like we just want to run out the clock to secure the 1 or 2 pt win...but you can do that from the 2nd qtr on....

The Skins have not gotten up early very often over the last 5+ years.

There has been too many blown leads under Haslett
