Ovechkin takes another dig at league

08:24 AM ET 10.22 | In addition to shattering a pane of glass with his head over the weekend, Alex Ovechkin sent a few more shots across the bow of the NHL. After Dynamo Moscow's victory, Ovechkin spoke with Russian reporters about the NHL lockout and reiterated that he would consider staying in Russia if his contract was cut significantly under a new deal. ... Many believe that Ovechkin's statements, along with speculation from other players that some may stay in Europe, may simply be an effort to sway negotiations rather than a genuine threat but it's tough to gauge at this stage. As for the overall status of the labor negotiations, Ovechkin doesn't believe the lockout will end soon. He said that the NHL's latest offer was "all the same, just in different words."

In addition to shattering a pane of glass with his head over the weekend
[i]Yet another indicator that the KHL uses sub-standard products. Unless O.V abandons his silly goal celebration routine of jumping into the glass after scoring a goal...There are going to be an awful lot of game delays. Rumour has it that it's the same company that is contracted to put the windows in their aircraft."

According to reports his salary in the KHL is $3 million a year less than in the US. Apparantly that's not a significant cut? Secondly, if you're that unhappy Alex, stay there. There will be no crying anywhere. It'll do wonders for the reputation you seem bent on ruining. Finally, whatever happens I don't believe any CURRENT contracts should be reduced. The owners signed 'em............right up until a few hours before the lockout. That's one thing I totally agree with the NHLPA about. Change going forward....................no change to contracts already signed.

That's what I want to see. Russian players who weren't good enough for the KHL playing over here. The quality of the sport will benefit oh so much ;)

Owners are probably counting on the contracts being reduced.
Look at the Wild. Teams signing last minute contracts counting on a reduction on this year's CBA is complete BS. Hold them accountable.

Yet if it's good enough to play over there at that paltry wage, why not here?

Dead on Slappy ! I am certainly a self disclosed member of the pro-owners camp in this matter, but any new deal better honor the deals they willingly and eagerly signed.

Why should the players have their salaries reduced on contracts signed by the owners? The issue here isn't the players salaries, it's the mismanagement of the league by putting franchises in markets that won't support a team. That is the primary cause, along with ridiculous contracts handed out by GMs, for the financial problems faced by teams. Asking the players to be responsible for shoddy management is a joke. If the owners can't afford to pay these salaries, then they shouldn't be offering these contracts.
The question is why aren't teams maintaining their financial houses better.
