McCarthy not pleased with Packers running backs

I guess that if all your RB's weren't broken, this might not be such an issue.

Doesn't Andy Reid run a used running back store ?

Maybe Vince Young would like to try halfback--he could be good at that.

Can't tell if McCarthy's comment was directed at Green or the O line or both. I always hear about how O linemen like running plays better because they're easier to block for but if you can't open holes for your RB then get used to pass blocking. I keep waiting for some coach to have the epiphany of using run blocking techniques for pass blocking. O lines immediately start backing up on pass blocking, giving the momentum advantage to the pass rushers. Oh well, maybe someday...

Might sound like a bad idea, but Ryan Grant is still available. Couldn't hurt to bring him in for the 2nd half of the season, or, more likely, until he gets injured.

The problem is that run-blocking is a more "instant" block, and doesn't hold up for long. By backing up, pass blocking gives blockers an extra split second to anticipate the rush and adjust, and allow for holding up the rush much longer.

For a rush-block scheme to work on a passing play, you need to either have VERY quick routes planned with a QB who has great read-and-react speed, or you need a mobile QB that can roll out of the pocket and re-establish off to the side. With such a QB, you could conceivably roll out, and pull your G from the other side to add to the blocking, but it's a huge question mark in terms of timing.

You have two backs that are injured from last year (Starks and Green) one of which hasn't carried a down yet the other gets injured shaving. There were plenty of guys available via free agency, plenty of young guys in the draft too but you stuck with a pack of losers and you wonder why it ain't working out.

Maybe it would have been a good idea to platoon your backs. Once you got Benson, no one else touched the ball. That only works as long as the guy don't get hurt. Then your forced to play someone who is unproven, unready and unfamiliar with the O line schemes and your in mid season.
Not to mention under your system your go to guy is beat up by game 11 and wasted by the end of the season and playoff time.

He has a couple of weeks to trade for one or he can put one on his wish list for next year.

Good analysis but I'd still like to see it. By moving into the block instead of allowing the defender to come to you, the rusher is now 1-2 yards further away from the QB and doesn't have the downhill momentum of rushing. This momentum is increased by the act of the O lineman backing up. I'm probably dead wrong on this but I'd like to see some team try it, if only in pre-season, just to see how it would work.

Run blocking is preferred by OL's because they're attacking the DL's and driving them backward whereas pass blocking is just the opposite. The more relevant point to the argument is that in order for play passes to be effective, your running game needs to present a credible threat to set the table. At this point, the Packers don't have a serviceable running game. Everybody knows Rodgers has no choice but to pass and they dare the Packers to run.

As for Ryan Grant, he's useless without an offensive line that can open big holes. If the Pack has already let him go and the Redskins have cut him despite injury problems at RB, that tells me he has "too little tread left on the tires". If anyone thinks Grant is a good idea, bring Ahman Green in for a tryout as well. Same bad idea!

That is correct. If you can't "Run to Daylight" then guys like Lombardi get @#$%^ off. The again we have McCarthy, and he never shows much enthusiasm for the run unless he gets cornered by it with a question....

The guy who had no running game was Eli and he won The Super Bowl, if you would like see Rodgers break all of Marino's recordable go ahead pass the Ball, if you want win the Super Bowl with a more effective passing game, the you got to run the ball! Let me give you a stat for that passing pipe your holding, the top 3 passers of all Time, Marino, Farve and Peyton Manning are tied with Super Bowl Rings with Eli, one Ring behind with Brady and two rings behind Bradshaw and Montana, so if you want to win the Super Bowl Run Da Ball!!!
