02:14 PM ET 10.23 | The Boston Red Sox are close to finalizing a deal with free agent designated hitter David Ortiz. Red Sox general manager Ben Cherington and new manager John Farrell talked with Big Papi today at Fenway Park. The two sides are discussing a two-year deal that could be worth up to $25 million. Reports indicate that the Red Sox hope to announce the move as soon as Friday. Ortiz missed the end of the season with an injured Achilles heel but claims that he is feeling well and should be able to begin his regular offseason workout. "I'm 36 and I know what I'm capable to do," Ortiz said, per ESPN Boston. "I know what's fair and I know guys my age aren't going to get three-, four- or five-year deals anymore, so I want to play two more and if things go good I'll continue to play."

I thought the BoSox were trying to unload their bloated contracts. That's a lot of dough to pay an oft-injured, over-the-hill DH.

Great hitter and my thanks for all he has done for the team but good lord is he over paid. Rounding second and is out for how long?
Seven mill a year with incentives would be all I???d offer. IMHO

Victor Martinez can still play C and 1B on occasion, and is a switch hitter. Advantage: VMart.

His best years are behind him and his season ending injury last season came when he was rounding second base. $25m is lot to pay for character and leadership.

New name...."Big money" or "Big Pepper" ....whichever...lol

wiseup: trade papi if you can or offer him 2 years for 15 mil. with incentives. If Papi refuses let him walk. that 25 mil. he was wanting would go a long way towards signing free agents. or signing draft choices, basicly working to get younger.

David Ortiz can't play more than two years, its no good to ask for a contract where the body can't longer perform as a payer,,,

Bobby V. says Ortiz quit on the team after the Red Sox made the salary dump trade with the Dodgers.

Bobby V. is an ass hat.

Papi deserves to be brought back with a good salary. He had a helluva year, and they need his stick in the middle of the order.

I hope that contract has some incentives in it for the number of games played.
If he's healthy he can hit, but keeping him on the field will be a growing problem as he ages over the next two years.

Not sure I'm ready to take anything Bobby V. says very seriously at this point in time.
Ya think he's bitter?
