Is Alex Smith regressing?

07:55 AM ET 10.24 | From Aaron Rodgers to Drew Brees to Eli Manning to Tom Brady and Matt Flynn, it seems every quarterback this season has had his clunker or two. [Apart from interceptions, Alex Smith's stats in 2012] are the same or better than the first seven games last year (115-182, 63%, 1,267, 9 TD, 2 INT). One of the issues is that he followed perhaps his best game ever, vs. Buffalo, with one of his worst games in three years, vs. the Giants. The contrast is stark, and it makes it seem as if he's regressed. Defenses are taking away his favorite target, Vernon Davis, and the 49ers have played two very good defensive opponents in recent weeks. ... Smith is in a valley right now, and it will be up to him, [Jim Harbaugh] and Greg Roman to climb out of it.

The Singletary Effect is taking place. New coach=player excitement. Following seasons=players go back to who they really are.

Last season Harbaugh coached around the running game making Alex dunk and dime around it... Teams have caught up to This forcing Alex to make throws to the sidelines and throw past 15 yds Which hasn't worked out for him. He's a mobile Trent Dilfer and this won't win this team a Superbowl. He's not regressing... he's just not adjusting to what's given to him on the field.

Give the Giants defense a little credit as well. And Seattle's D is no cream puff, either. Too early to make such a sweeping conclusion. Smith has improved tremendously over the last two years, and Harbaugh is a big reason why. Let's see how the rest of the season plays out.

Are we done with the Alex Smith is a real NFL QB talk? The defense carried the team last year. He's being asked to do more this year and showing that he's not up to the task.

Due to SF chasing the Peyton Dragon, it should be crystal clear to Smith that his future in SF is limited to whenever they can bring in a real QB.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing. If he is regressing, it's a short trip.

In today's NFL a guy can be an MVP candidate one week and then fans want him banned from the league the next....SMH....too much knee jerk reaction in our "microwave society".
Isn't his team still tops in the division and looking like a top tier team? Geeeez...chillax ppl

Yes. Seattle's offense doesn't play well on the road, but their defense shows up for every game. The 49ers ran into consecutive good defensive teams, were crushed by one and beat the other. That's nothing to panic about.
