Crist loses job to redshirt freshman

08:12 AM ET 10.24 | Perhaps the absence of drama is the most significant storyline in Charlie Weis' selecting former backup Michael Cummings as the starter against Texas on Saturday. Cummings, a redshirt freshman, began the season behind senior starter Dayne Crist. But Crist's first year at KU has been largely unsuccessful, and Cummings provided a spark off the bench in a 20-14 loss to Oklahoma State on Oct. 13. Cummings started this past week against Oklahoma as Weis juggled both quarterbacks during the first half. Now Weis is sticking with Cummings as the starter -- although future performance could dictate more changes. "They both know that Michael's starting and we'll see where it goes," Weis said Tuesday.
