Shurmur expected to be fired

07:40 AM ET 10.25 | As Mike Holmgren moved aside in Cleveland, he left with the parting words of a man who felt as if progress had been made, even in the bottom-line business of winning in the NFL. Holmgren's best move as president was hiring Tom Heckert as general manager, and Heckert doesn't expect to survive a purge by [Joe Banner]. Holmgren also selected Pat Shurmur as head coach. ... Shurmur is expected to be fired unless there is a miraculous turn-around in the last nine games. When Holmgren talked about the table being set, he was referring to the personnel department headed by Heckert. He was also referring to Brandon Weeden, Trent Richardson, Josh Gordon and other young players added to the roster in the Holmgren-Heckert era.

A team of perpetual losers goes through a complete management change and ends up a team of perpetual losers.
Hopefully for the Browns, rebuilding from the very top with a new owner will change this.

What cracks me up is that Holmgren, Heckert, Shurmur and Childress all have the same agent. Looks like Lamonte is going to be very busy finding these guys jobs for next year!

The only guy that I see coaching next year would be Childress. I am sure Shurmur will latch on somewhere but not as a head coach. Then again, now that I think about it, Shurmur really didn't have any success as a O coordinator either.

If you are greeted by a chubby guy named "Mike" on your next trip to Wal-Mart, you'll know he's come up with an answer to that problem.

Cleveland's first problem is its owner. You simply cannot be owned by a Steeler's fan. How do you ever accept that you are owned by the Steelers? That is just a huge indignity which should never be accepted.
The article talks about how Holgrem set the table with the team's personnel before he left. I graded his 2012 as an F. He successfully took a 4 - 12 team from 2011, had 13 draft picks which can significantly change a roster, had free agency to help, and made the team the worst team in the league.
The Browns as an organziation are in a very sorry state, starting with the owner, the presendent, and the GM. I think the coach actually has very good potential, similar to Belechik before he went to New England.

I don't know. I mean the Steelers have owned the Browns for a long time, so what's the difference?

Belichick, though, didn't do very well in Cleveland. Remember, the team he had there moved to Baltimore and became the Ravens, along with its management and ownership.
The only thing that remains to blame is the team name and the city. Nothing else is left.

First, he's not a Steelers fan. Yes he still owns a small portion of the team but its not like he was a life long fan and then bought into their organization. He wanted to become an NFL owner and when he approached the league a few years back they put him in touch with the Steelers. When a team came available the NFL approached Jimmy and that got the ball rolling.
If you have watched any of the Browns games this year you would see that the talent on the field is not the main reason they are 1-6. Shurmur has not put his team in a position to win with his bad play calling and expectations he puts on rookies. If you need an example look no further than the Ravens game where Weeden threw the ball 52 times! They drafted a RB with their first pick in the draft yet they seem to not want to run the ball saying they are a "Pass first" team (quoted Joe Thomas). The game they won this year was due to a more balanced attach where they ran the ball 31x and threw it 29x. Also, if you watched the Colts game you would see that they ran the ball 17x but practically abandoned it in the second half, yet they still ran play action???
What the Browns desperately need is a coach who can motivate these players and get them to pay more attention to detail. There should be no jumping offsides on 4th and 1 like they did against the Colts. I would like to see a coach like Chip Kelly, either one of the Grudens or Brian Billick. All have head coaching experience and all have proven themselves and hold their players accountable.
If you think Shurmur has potential you will quickly be proven wrong when NOBODY hires him as a HC. He was a inexperienced O coordinator at best, with limited body of work to justify his readiness to coach a team!
